{"id":556421,"date":"2024-08-21T07:45:41","date_gmt":"2024-08-21T05:45:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=556421"},"modified":"2024-08-21T07:46:44","modified_gmt":"2024-08-21T05:46:44","slug":"chatgpt-owner-openai-signs-licensing-deal-with-major-media-company","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/ai\/556421-chatgpt-owner-openai-signs-licensing-deal-with-major-media-company.html","title":{"rendered":"ChatGPT owner OpenAI signs licensing deal with major media company"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Cond\u00e9 Nast has penned a multi-year agreement with OpenAI to license the magazine company\u2019s content, the latest high-profile media deal for the artificial intelligence startup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OpenAI, which makes ChatGPT and other AI tools, will display content from brands like Vogue, the New Yorker and Wired within its products, the company\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/conde-nast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0Tuesday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The deal also allows OpenAI to use Cond\u00e9 Nast\u2019s content to help train its AI models, which require vast amounts of data to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The announcement marks an expansion of OpenAI\u2019s efforts to cut deals with media companies, rather than battle them over how the company uses news articles and other content in its AI tools. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Financial terms were not disclosed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s crucial that we meet audiences where they are and embrace new technologies while also ensuring proper attribution and compensation for use of our intellectual property,\u201d wrote Cond\u00e9 Nast Chief Executive Officer Roger Lynch in a memo to employees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is exactly what we have found with OpenAI.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OpenAI has been \u201ctransparent and willing to productively work with publishers,\u201d Lynch said, adding that the deal is \u201cjust the beginning\u201d of the \u201cfight for fair deals and partnerships across the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past year, OpenAI has made similar deals with Axel Springer, the Atlantic, and Vox Media, among others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not every outlet, however, is working with with the company. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In December, the New York Times sued the startup for allegedly using its copyrighted articles without permission to build its technology.
