<\/strong>The ongoing patent battle between Apple and Samsung has boiled down to the shape and design similarities of both companies’ tablets, but Samsung\u2019s Chief Product Officer Kevin Packingham feels it\u2019s unreasonable.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn terms of patents, we have a made lot of contributions in the design space as well. I would say the patents we\u2019re struggling with \u2014 where there\u2019s a lot of discussion and litigation right now \u2014 are around these very broad design patents like a rectangle\u201d, Packingham explained.<\/p>\n

Packingham believes that the industry is in a convoluted state, where companies are trying to claim that they own rights to a common shape.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor us, it\u2019s unreasonable that we\u2019re fighting over rectangles, that that\u2019s being considered as an infringement, which is why we\u2019re defending ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Samsung chief product officer hopes that the industry can move past the current patent issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an industry issue that we need to collectively solve,\u201d Packingham continued, \u201cso we need to find a way in which we can have healthy competition and not try to stifle competition with patents that aren\u2019t particularly unique, and really don\u2019t represent intellectual property.\u201d<\/p>\n
