OpenAI and Hearst Communications have struck a deal to bring content from the publisher\u2019s suite of magazines and newspapers into chatbot ChatGPT, adding to a long list of partnerships the artificial intelligence startup has inked with media companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As part of the agreement, which was\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0on Tuesday, Hearst will license content from Esquire, Cosmopolitan, Elle and more than 40 newspapers for use across OpenAI\u2019s products. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Hearst\u2019s content will appear in ChatGPT with attribution to provide \u201ctransparency and easy access to the original Hearst sources,\u201d the companies said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAs generative AI matures, it\u2019s critical that journalism created by professional journalists be at the heart of all AI products,\u201d Hearst Newspapers President Jeff Johnson said in a statement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThis agreement allows the trustworthy and curated content created by Hearst Newspapers\u2019 award-winning journalists to be part of OpenAI\u2019s products like ChatGPT \u2014 creating more timely and relevant results.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n OpenAI has been\u00a0striking licensing deals<\/a>\u00a0with publishers such as Cond\u00e9 Nast, News Corp. and Time magazine to train its AI models and to integrate more authoritative, up-to-date information within its products. <\/p>\n\n\n\n As part of some of these deals, OpenAI has also agreed to give users news summaries with attribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not every outlet is working with the company, however. In December, the New York Times<\/a> sued the startup for allegedly using its copyrighted articles without permission to build its technology.
