Facebook reports that they have 5.3 million users in South Africa, with Arthur Goldstuck, MD of South African research firm World Wide Worx saying that there are at least 25% additional sign-ups from mobile phone users.<\/p>\n

Johannesburg has 1.09 million users, Cape Town has 857,000, Pretoria has 696,000, and Durban 478,000.<\/p>\n

Goldstuck said that the figure of 5.3 million comes directly from Facebook\u2019s own measurement tool, but explained that the impact of mobile phones isn\u2019t accurately reflected in those numbers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat Facebook can\u2019t tell you is who has signed on from a mobile phone without giving their location,\u201d Goldstuck said.<\/p>\n

They estimate that there are at least 25% additional sign-ups from mobile phones without giving their location, Goldstuck said.<\/p>\n

Goldstuck said that he will be presenting the full results of their research with Mike Wronski from Fuseware on 4 September at a Marketing Mix conference in Sandton.<\/p>\n

He said that Wronski has taken up the issue of tracking statistics of mobile phone users with Facebook, who have acknowledged that they don\u2019t have a way of tracking mobile users without giving their locations.<\/p>\n

Twitter<\/h3>\n

Goldstuck said that they will also be revealing their new Twitter data at the event in September.<\/p>\n

Right now Goldstuck could safely say that by August 2012 South Africa\u2019s Twitter base had grown past the 2 million user mark. This is up from the 1.1 million users reported last year.<\/p>\n

Others<\/h3>\n

Google+ hasn\u2019t really captured the imagination of South African social network users, Goldstuck said.<\/p>\n

However, they will be looking in-depth at the changing face of Mxit as its user base starts getting older, as well as the tremendous rise of WhatsApp usage in South Africa and the demographic breakdown of 2go users.<\/p>\n
