{"id":584495,"date":"2025-02-27T13:58:31","date_gmt":"2025-02-27T11:58:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=584495"},"modified":"2025-02-27T13:58:37","modified_gmt":"2025-02-27T11:58:37","slug":"dstv-rival-bites-the-dust","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/584495-dstv-rival-bites-the-dust.html","title":{"rendered":"DStv rival bites the dust"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>StarSat South Africa marketing manager Jan Hendrik Harmse has told MyBroadband that OnDigital Media, the pay-TV broadcaster&#8217;s licence holder, has been liquidated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>StarSat was forced to stop broadcasting in the country after the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) disconnected its signals during a raid in October 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pay-TV broadcaster hasn&#8217;t updated customers since it issued a notice informing viewers of the challenges on 8 October 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Due to Icasa&#8217;s removal of broadcasting equipment, StarSat is experiencing signal interruptions,&#8221; it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/starsatsa\/posts\/pfbid0y1eR9jKycqQBnMJkK92tBBiZNZ54VrB9PiYdC6yunbhezJrxhwaTEMj4pFH7xeV3l?__cft__[0]=AZVwGOHK-cdqzaenDnZEsYNv8AQf0PTao4G9tvOqE556CKod52wcPz5BnDX-Q_vDhK7g_aRKIag9ND7n92KrsZkDhtuyEhFjuDtsPJbYMmdwlQZJrlJ0t7su-vYaJ1iiBemJJJ3dNNlhOfqi-9zQnHotkmMfDL7HUodgE-9za_8glg&amp;__tn__=%2CO%2CP-R\">said<\/a> in its latest update to customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We apologise for the inconvenience caused and will continue to work tirelessly to return your viewing pleasure.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>StarSat temporarily suspended all payments following the disconnection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Customers who have paid will not lose their money and will be rewarded with bonuses once the signal is restored,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With many complaining that they were unable to get their subscription fees from October refunded, MyBroadband asked StarSat about its fight with Icasa and its challenges in reimbursing subscribers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;OnDigital Media, the independent broadcasting licence holder that processed payments of StarSat, has been liquidated,&#8221; said Harmse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>StarSat customers had taken to the broadcaster&#8217;s Facebook page to voice their frustration over the <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/584258-outrage-over-fallen-dstv-rival.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/584258-outrage-over-fallen-dstv-rival.html\">lack of service and refunds<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For reference, StarSat instructed customers who wanted refunds to email their requests to wecare@starsat.co.za. However, many report that their emails have gone unanswered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Calls to the customer support centre also go unanswered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;StarSat SA can you please reimburse me now? It&#8217;s been months without any subscriptions. I can&#8217;t afford to lose my money. Please just pay back my money for the month of October,&#8221; one user&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/starsatsa\/posts\/pfbid0y1eR9jKycqQBnMJkK92tBBiZNZ54VrB9PiYdC6yunbhezJrxhwaTEMj4pFH7xeV3l?comment_id=1203657954427080&amp;__cft__[0]=AZUhSTtxG6lQLIUy-JY8GnH_42_DmS2CynbcVcMUiaPMDPpD_nzXFcmINM6fGwYGjnMwBcKui_38UHPOqG9jj24qJ15YwHl4JpVzzPaqpVmYQEeQPSq75eNiYz_dlzmNop3byfZOC62nUeKbFZYVdEhKZb6Bpc-Kd2KOHedJv9VmPw&amp;__tn__=R]-R\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Since your last communication with us on 8 October 2024, it&#8217;s now 4 months later, and you just went mute on us as if we don&#8217;t exist anymore,&#8221; another&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/starsatsa\/posts\/pfbid0y1eR9jKycqQBnMJkK92tBBiZNZ54VrB9PiYdC6yunbhezJrxhwaTEMj4pFH7xeV3l?comment_id=1163645578820100\">commented<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Failure to meet deadline<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/StarSat-offices.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-540611\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/StarSat-offices.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/StarSat-offices-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/StarSat-offices-800x533.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/StarSat-offices-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">StarSat&#8217;s offices in Midrand, Johannesburg<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The issues stem from OnDigital Media&#8217;s failure to renew StarSat&#8217;s broadcasting licence within the required timeframe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>StarSat&#8217;s broadcasting licence expired in July 2023, and it missed the deadline to submit the documentation required for the renewal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the pay-TV broadcaster continued operating despite its expired licence, prompting Icasa to instruct it to shut down by 18 September 2024 \u2014 an instruction StarSat defied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The regulator, in partnership with law enforcement officials, conducted a <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/563236-goodbye-starsat.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/563236-goodbye-starsat.html\">raid on StarSat&#8217;s Midrand headquarters<\/a> on 2 October 2024, during which it disconnected its broadcast signals, including those to the rest of Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time of the raid, Harmse acknowledged that StarSat was late to submit its application, blaming several factors, including the Covid-19 pandemic and unfinished shareholder agreements, that resulted in its late submission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We kept communicating the issue to them,&#8221; he said, adding that StarSat had warned Icasa that the application would be late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The broadcaster still <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/578436-dstv-rival-fight-for-survival.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/578436-dstv-rival-fight-for-survival.html\">hoped to relaunch<\/a> its services as of January 2025, when Harmse told MyBroadband that it was fighting to operate in South Africa once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, StarSat has failed.
