{"id":588342,"date":"2025-03-24T20:51:41","date_gmt":"2025-03-24T18:51:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=588342"},"modified":"2025-03-24T20:53:41","modified_gmt":"2025-03-24T18:53:41","slug":"telkom-launches-mobile-virtual-network-operator-platform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/588342-telkom-launches-mobile-virtual-network-operator-platform.html","title":{"rendered":"Telkom launches mobile virtual network operator platform"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Telkom has entered the South African mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) market through a partnership with a Mobile Virtual Network Enabler (MVNE) platform provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The partially state-owned telecommunications giant did not disclose the MVNE&#8217;s name but said it had a proven track record in the South African market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Telkom explained that signing the MVNE platform agreement would enable it to meet the regulatory stipulations by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would also enable the identification and onboarding of multiple MVNOs to strengthen its competitive position in the market, Telkom said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ICASA requires mobile network operators like Telkom to support at least three black-owned MVNOs as part of their spectrum licence conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa\u2019s MVNO market is expanding rapidly, with banks, insurance firms, and major retailers driving competition in the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/568822-good-news-for-mvnos-in-south-africa.html\">BMI-T&#8217;s 2024 MVNO Report<\/a> said subscribers at virtual operators almost doubled from just over 2.5 since 2022 to under 5 million last year.
