{"id":589613,"date":"2025-04-03T10:00:53","date_gmt":"2025-04-03T08:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=589613"},"modified":"2025-05-12T12:22:17","modified_gmt":"2025-05-12T10:22:17","slug":"sabcs-secret-weapon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/589613-sabcs-secret-weapon.html","title":{"rendered":"SABC&#8217;s secret weapon"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The SABC&#8217;s video streaming service is seeing tremendous growth and is set to play a fundamental part in the public broadcaster&#8217;s planned return to profitability over the next few years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>National Treasury&#8217;s Budget Review document <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/586881-sabc-has-a-plan-to-turn-r1-billion-annual-profit.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/586881-sabc-has-a-plan-to-turn-r1-billion-annual-profit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recently revealed<\/a> the public broadcaster was expecting to report a R27.5 million loss in the 2024\/2025 financial year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though it is a loss, it would be a commendable improvement over the R200 million loss recorded in 2023\/2024 and record a R1.13 billion loss from 2022\/2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The broadcaster expects to have collected R6.95 billion in revenue in the 2024\/2025 financial year, up signficantly from R5.1 billion in 2023\/2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Revenues are expected to increase to R7.75 billion in each of the two next financial years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is anticpated to support a profit of R907 million in 2026\/2027, followed by a R784 million profit in 2027\/2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>National Treasury said the SABC had developed a strategy that detailed clear actions on new commercial capabilities to deepen its digital transformation and take advantage of new platforms and emerging technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This will be done through increased commercialisation of the recently revamped over-the-top platform known as SABC+,&#8221; Treasury said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SABC told National Treasury that it was targeting 750,000 SABC+ users in the 2025\/2026 financial year and one million by 2026\/2027. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the SABC appears to have underpromised \u2014 or underestimated \u2014 the service&#8217;s growth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Launched in November 2022, the initial SABC+ platform was effectively a rebranding of the TelkomOne streaming service rolled out about a year earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That version of the service had surged to an estimated one million active monthly users by May 2024, which was anything but measly growth in a year and a half. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, in July 2024, the platform was <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/543063-sabc-relaunches-free-streaming-service-with-new-features-and-two-big-catches.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/543063-sabc-relaunches-free-streaming-service-with-new-features-and-two-big-catches.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">relaunched<\/a> with stability improvements, new features, higher resolution streaming, catch-up content, and support for new smart TV operating systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to a new URL at sabc-plus.com, it also reintroduced the requirement for users to register to access the service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, the service effectively had to start from scratch in growing its user base. By the start of April 2025, that had increased to 850,000 users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With an average of 94,444 new users every month since relaunch, the service could break past one million registrations in the 2025\/2026 year, well ahead of its communicated target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Internet traffic analysis platform Similarweb also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/sabc-plus.com\/#ranking\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/website\/sabc-plus.com\/#ranking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">showed substantial growth<\/a> for the sabc-plus.com website, notching close to one million visitors in January 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the shorter month of February, the figure had declined slightly to about 861,600 users. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, SABC+&#8217;s ranking in South Africa improved from 463rd in December 2024 to 388th to February 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While still just a fraction of its overall income, SABC+&#8217;s expansion increased digital revenue by 66% between 2022\/2023 and 2023\/2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pre-roll ads were introduced to SABC+ at the start of the last financial year, which should have a positive impact on the digital revenue to be reported in the SABC&#8217;s 2024\/2025 financial results. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SABC communications head Mmoni Ngubane also told MyBroadband the service will be implementing banner ads &#8220;soon,&#8221; increasing its monetisation potential. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Ngubane emphasised that SABC+ was not yet profitable and that the broadcaster&#8217;s corporate plan included different strategies to ensure all its platforms and channels were optimised for favourable performance in terms of the SABC&#8217;s public and commercial mandate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The SABC+ streaming service has performed remarkably well, which is essential considering its part in the broadcaster&#8217;s anticipated return to profitability over the next few years. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":341042,"featured_media":508036,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[24],"tags":[54043,99415,53599,68938,361,96857,62312],"class_list":["post-589613","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-broadcasting","tag-ad-revenue","tag-mmoni-ngubane","tag-public-broadcaster","tag-public-broadcasting","tag-sabc","tag-sabc-4","tag-video-streaming-services"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/589613"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/341042"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=589613"}],"version-history":[{"count":10,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/589613\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":594386,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/589613\/revisions\/594386"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/508036"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=589613"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=589613"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=589613"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
