Africa’s best fibre network operator

A MyBroadband analysis has shown that Openserve is the best fibre network operator (FNO) in South Africa, followed by Vumatel and Zoom Fibre.

These results are based on over 8,000 tests performed on the MyBroadband Speed Test website between 1 January and 31 March 2025.

For these tests, users specified their FNO and advertised connection speeds, and rated their connection out of five.

MyBroadband then used this data to calculate user satisfaction for the different fibre network operators.

Ranking FNOs is not simple, as many standard metrics — such as the average download and upload speed — depend more on the package a user selects from their Internet service provider (ISP) than on the performance of their FNO.

MyBroadband has developed a thorough scoring algorithm that accounts for all of these variables to determine the best FNO from these results.

The FNOs are scored in five different categories:

Download Score – How close the average user speed test comes to the advertised download speed for their fibre connection.

Upload Score – How close the average user speed test comes to the advertised upload speed for their fibre connection.

Latency Score – How often user speed test results have acceptable latencies.

Jitter Score – Calculated from the percentage of speed test results with acceptable jitter values.

User Score – Users on the MyBroadband Speedtest platform can rate their connection from 1 to 5.

These metrics are all combined into an overall score to determine the best fibre network operator.

MyBroadband only considers the scores of the largest FNOs in South Africa in its ratings.

Openserve in the top spot

Openserve took the top spot in the Q1 2025 rankings.

It had the best actual download speeds compared to advertised speeds and was also the best-rated FNO by its consumers.

Openserve also maintained above-average scores in the other categories, resulting in an overall score ahead of the pack.

Openserve is the second biggest FNO in South Africa by homes passed and connected, surpassed only by Vumatel.

Achieving consistently good scores and the highest rating from the large customer base is a testament to the quality and reliability of the Openserve fibre network.

Vumatel achieved second place and had the best average latencies.

Zoom Fibre had the best upload speeds compared to what was advertised and achieved third place in the final score.

Octotel connections had the least average jitter out of the tested FNOs.

South Africa’s top FNOs

The following table ranks South Africa’s major FNOs in the first quarter of 2025 based on MyBroadband speed test data.

<div
