{"id":59167,"date":"2012-09-06T11:00:31","date_gmt":"2012-09-06T09:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=59167"},"modified":"2012-11-14T21:29:18","modified_gmt":"2012-11-14T19:29:18","slug":"robot-cheetah-is-faster-than-usain-bolt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/technology\/59167-robot-cheetah-is-faster-than-usain-bolt.html","title":{"rendered":"Robot cheetah is faster than Usain Bolt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A four-legged robot called the Cheetah, whose development was funded by the Pentagon, has run 28.3 miles per hour in an experiment run by the US military research arm.<\/p>\n<p>The world record for the 100 meter dash was set by sprinter Usain Bolt in 2009, averaging 23.35 mph for a time of 9.58 seconds. Over a 20-meter stretch, he managed to get up to 27.78 mph.<\/p>\n<p>This makes the Cheetah faster than Bolt.<\/p>\n<p>The Cheetah &#8211; a quadrupedal machine built by master roboteers, Boston Dynamics and backed by Darpa, the defense department\u2019s far-out research division topped Bolt\u2019s record-setting time, and also managed to beat its previous top speed of 18 mph (set in a previous experiment).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be fair, keep in mind that the Cheetah robot runs on a treadmill without wind drag and has an off-board power supply that it does not carry,\u201d a Boston Dynamics press release read. \u201cSo Bolt is still the superior athlete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company is looking to improve upon the limitations by modifying the Cheetah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur real goal is to create a robot that moves freely outdoors while it runs fast.
