They were mostly across Gauteng, while the 16th and 17th places were in Bloemfontein and Krugersdorp, respectively.

Furthermore, the top three fastest download speeds of 2024 were all recorded in Noordwyk, Midrand and on the Vodacom network.

It is worth noting that this is in close proximity to the Vodacom Offices, where a lot of network testing is done.

These top three results were 1,300.9Mbps, 1,234.0Mbps, and 1,200Mbps — on a Samsung Galaxy S21+ (#1) and two Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra’s (#2 and #3).

MTN dominated in the Western Cape, as the only two top-20 speed tests from the region were on the MTN network. Both were in Table View, Cape Town.

Interestingly, a handful of non-flagship devices made it into the top 20.

This includes the Samsung Galaxy A34, the Samsung Galaxy A54, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE+, showing that fast network speeds are not only for elite, R30,000+ smartphones.

Mid-range devices are holding their own, and are even able to deliver gigabit-level network speeds in areas with good coverage.

The table below provides an overview of the top 20 speed test results recorded in South Africa in 2024.

Rank

Device

Download Speed (Mbps)

Upload Speed (Mbps)

Latency (ms)

Location

Operator

1

Samsung Galaxy S21+

1300.918

124.089

13

Noordwyk, Midrand

Vodacom

2

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

1234.024

124.246

21

Noordwyk, Midrand

Vodacom

3

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

1200.962

129.499

20

Noordwyk, Midrand

Vodacom

4

Samsung Galaxy S23

1182.965

101.549

16

Table View, Cape Town

MTN

5

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

1058.642

131.502

13

Edenvale, Johannesburg

Vodacom

6

Samsung Galaxy A34

1051.103

78.11

19

Centurion

Vodacom

7

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

1041.711

104.981

20

Garsfontein, Pretoria

Vodacom

8

Samsung Galaxy S22

1035.933

59.82

19

Claremont, Cape Town

Vodacom

9

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4

1026.001

103.372

15

Bryanston, Sandton

Vodacom

10

Samsung Galaxy S22

1019.916

113.13

19

Lone Hill, Sandton

Vodacom

11

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

1017.98

121.995

19

Location unknown

Vodacom

12

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE+

1003.968

116.571

24

O.R.
