{"id":5924,"date":"2008-11-10T14:22:00","date_gmt":"2008-11-10T12:22:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2008-11-10T14:22:00","modified_gmt":"2008-11-10T12:22:00","slug":"telkom-to-buy-mweb-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/telecoms\/5924-telkom-to-buy-mweb-africa.html","title":{"rendered":"Telkom to buy MWEB Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Telkom, a wholly owned subsidiary of Telkom SA Limited (&ldquo;Telkom&rdquo;), today announced it has entered into agreements to acquire 100% of MWEB Africa Limited (&ldquo;MWEB Africa&rdquo;) and 75% of MWEB Namibia (Proprietary) Limited. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The purchase price for the MWEB Africa group including AFSAT and MWEB Namibia is US$63 million (approximately R610 million). These shareholdings will be acquired from Multichoice Africa Limited and MIH Holdings Limited respectively, which are members of the Naspers Limited Group.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom CEO, Reuben September, said the transaction gives impetus to the Company&rsquo;s strategic imperative of becoming a Pan-African integrated service provider. &ldquo;Expanding beyond the borders of South Africa provides Telkom with an opportunity to become less dependent on domestic revenue streams&rdquo;.<\/p>\n<p>MWEB Africa is an internet services provider in Sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa) and also provides network access services in some countries.&nbsp; Although its operations are largely focused on corporate customers, MWEB Africa&rsquo;s predominantly satellite-based internet access offerings allows the company to reach a wide range of customers, many of which are not reached by traditional fixed-line infrastructures.<\/p>\n<p>MWEB Africa is headquartered in Mauritius with operations in Namibia, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe, an agency arrangement in Botswana and distributors in 26 Sub-Saharan African countries. <\/p>\n<p>The successful conclusion of the agreements being entered into is subject to conditions precedent, including regulatory approvals being obtained in certain African jurisdictions. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the transaction, September said, &ldquo;The acquisition further reflects Telkom&rsquo;s strategy of expanding and deepening its footprint in key markets across Sub-Saharan Africa.&nbsp; This acquisition together with Telkom&rsquo;s investment in Africa Online is expected to increase the value proposition of our product and service offerings to all customer segments in Sub-Saharan Africa.&nbsp; Telkom&rsquo;s position as partner of choice for connectivity and related services in Africa is expected to be strengthened.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update:<\/strong>&nbsp; Naspers has terminated the auction of MWEB SA.&nbsp; &ldquo;Given economic conditions globally and the contraction in credit markets, shareholders are also advised that Naspers has terminated the auction process for the disposal of MWeb SA,&quot; Naspers said in a SENS announcement.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php?t=144801\">Telkom MWEB deal discussion<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Telkom set to acquire MWEB Africa and majority equity stake in MWEB Namibia <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5924","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-telecoms"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5924"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=5924"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5924\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=5924"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=5924"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=5924"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
