{"id":597974,"date":"2025-06-10T19:08:33","date_gmt":"2025-06-10T17:08:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=597974"},"modified":"2025-06-11T07:47:01","modified_gmt":"2025-06-11T05:47:01","slug":"warning-to-fnb-virtual-card-users","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/597974-warning-to-fnb-virtual-card-users.html","title":{"rendered":"Warning to FNB virtual card users"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Several FNB customers have reported not receiving notifications for transactions on their virtual cards between 31 May and 4 June 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MyBroadband first noticed <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/forum\/threads\/tips-to-boost-your-ebucks-1-july-2025-to-30-june-2026.1317063\/page-4\">feedback<\/a> about people not receiving in-app or emailed &#8220;InContact&#8221; notifications for virtual card transactions last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Is anyone noticing something weird with InContact messages? I&#8217;m getting them for transfers, EFTs, eWallet, the works,&#8221; one customer posted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;But it&#8217;s missed some of my debit orders, and I&#8217;ve had none for any virtual card taps or spend online since around the 31st of last month [May 2025].&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The user explained they had FNB support reset their inContact information, but the problem remained. &#8220;Checked it via the website too, and it&#8217;s all set up properly,&#8221; they said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They added that although only their virtual credit card transactions were impacted, they had not tried any physical cards or virtual debit cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four more forum members reported having the same issue, and several MyBroadband staff members subsequently checked their FNB app and confirmed they had the same issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One staff member exclusively transacts with a virtual card for in-person and online payments. They performed nine virtual card transactions with a combined value over R6,000 with an InContact alert. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the payments were reflected in their transaction history on the mobile app and Internet banking but they had to open these platforms to see the payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was unclear whether all the affected users were using a particular digital wallet, the MyBroadband staff member had his virtual card linked to Google Wallet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lack of notifications is concerning, as it could result in a customer losing a lot or all of their money if their card details had been compromised without their knowledge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, it seemed the problem was resolved late in the week, as InContact notifications had returned for several of the impacted users from 5 June 2025. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FNB credit card COO Gareth Rimmington acknowledged there was a disruption in sending notifications for virtual card transactions from 31 May 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The issue affected all virtual card users who were transacting at the time that this issue was persisting,&#8221; Rimmington said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The matter has since been resolved and we have put measures in place to keep customers informed of any service disruption in the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rimmington said the bank resolved the issue on 4 June 2025, the same day customers first alerted FNB of the problem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Importance of transaction notifications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/FNBVirtualCardContactless800x533V.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-419782\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/FNBVirtualCardContactless800x533V.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/FNBVirtualCardContactless800x533V-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/FNBVirtualCardContactless800x533V-640x426.jpg 640w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/FNBVirtualCardContactless800x533V-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The lack of InContact notifications <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/forum\/threads\/tips-to-boost-your-ebucks-1-july-2025-to-30-june-2026.1317063\/page-4\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/forum\/threads\/tips-to-boost-your-ebucks-1-july-2025-to-30-june-2026.1317063\/page-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">previously resulted<\/a> in an FNB customer being unable to act promptly to stop fraud on his bank account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frontend software engineer Herman Stander explained that he had lost an entire month&#8217;s salary after falling victim to a phishing attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fraudsters appropriated Stander&#8217;s virtual card information through a fake link to pay customs on an SA Post Office package.
