{"id":59913,"date":"2012-09-17T17:00:25","date_gmt":"2012-09-17T15:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=59913"},"modified":"2012-09-19T16:11:07","modified_gmt":"2012-09-19T14:11:07","slug":"boosting-mwebs-uncapped-adsl-performance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/adsl\/59913-boosting-mwebs-uncapped-adsl-performance.html","title":{"rendered":"Boosting MWEB\u2019s uncapped ADSL performance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"MWEB\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/226947-MWeb\">MWEB<\/a> has recently added an <a title=\"Akamai\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/212578-Akamai\">Akamai<\/a> content delivery network (CDN) node to its network, further improving the performance for its uncapped <a title=\"ADSL\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/224881-ADSL\">ADSL<\/a> customers.<\/p>\n<p>Content delivery networks (CDN) allow Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to serve content faster and cheaper to their subscribers by bringing the content closer to local broadband users.<\/p>\n<p>CDN servers are often hosted on the ISP\u2019s own network, which means that their subscribers are served content which previously came from international server from the ISP\u2019s local infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>With the addition of the Akamai CDN, MWEB now has three prominent content delivery networks on its network.<\/p>\n<p>MWEB ISP CEO <a title=\"Derek Hershaw\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/226207-Derek-Hershaw\">Derek Hershaw<\/a> said that they are proud to have Akamai CDN, Level 3 CDN, and other caching\u00a0servers on its network.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_59915\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/adsl\/59913-boosting-mwebs-uncapped-adsl-performance.html\/attachment\/mweb-data-centre\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-59915\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59915\" class=\"size-full wp-image-59915\" title=\"MWEB data centre\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/MWEB-data-centre.jpg\" alt=\"MWEB data centre\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/MWEB-data-centre.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/MWEB-data-centre-100x66.jpg 100w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/MWEB-data-centre-185x123.jpg 185w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/MWEB-data-centre-250x166.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-59915\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MWEB data centre<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Open peering further boosts performance, says MWEB<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hershaw further highlighted the benefits of free and open peering in South Africa. \u201cPeering, which essentially establishes data-fetching short cuts through direct links into other networks, helps deliver a faster and more stable user experience,\u201d said Hershaw.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMWEB is a long-standing champion of open, settlement free peering and believes peering to be essential in moving the South African Internet landscape forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hershaw told MyBroadband that they currently peer with all the major telecoms players in South Africa, which reduces the cost of delivering broadband services to end users.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe content that MWEB makes available to consumers, including news portals and rich media content such as gaming and live streaming, contributes to a world-class Internet experience for all South Africans,\u201d said Hershaw.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpen peering is common practice with large networks internationally and although it is still new to the South African market, we are already seeing local users on other networks taking advantage of it.
