{"id":59921,"date":"2012-09-14T14:08:23","date_gmt":"2012-09-14T12:08:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=59921"},"modified":"2012-09-14T14:45:09","modified_gmt":"2012-09-14T12:45:09","slug":"iphone-5-lte-support-in-sa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/59921-iphone-5-lte-support-in-sa.html","title":{"rendered":"iPhone 5 LTE support in SA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the <a title=\"Apple\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/342717-Apple-inc\">Apple<\/a> website, the newly announced iPhone 5 will come in a number of models that support different mobile network frequency bands.<\/p>\n<p>Two model numbers are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/iphone\/LTE\/\" target=\"_blank\">listed on the Apple website<\/a>: A1428 and A1429.<\/p>\n<p>Apple&#8217;s site suggests that the A1428 seems to be targeted at the North American <a title=\"GSM\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/289461-GSM-Global-System-for-Mobile\">GSM<\/a> networks, supporting Long Term Evolution (<a title=\"LTE\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/367212-Long-term-Evolution-(LTE)\">LTE<\/a>) bands 4 and 17.<\/p>\n<p>Model A1429 of the iPhone has two \u201csub-models\u201d: one for <a title=\"CDMA\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/289409-CDMA-Code-Division-Multiple-Access\">CDMA<\/a> networks and the other for GSM network.<\/p>\n<p>Although the A1428 and A1429 GSM both support the same 3G (UMTS\/HSPA+\/DC-HSDPA) and GSM\/EDGE frequencies, based on the supported LTE bands it seems most likely that South Africa will receive the A1429 model.<\/p>\n<p>The iPhone 5 A1429 GSM supports LTE bands 1 (2,100MHz), 3 (1,800MHz), and 5 (850 MHz).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_57287\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57287\" class=\"size-full wp-image-57287\" title=\"Kanagaratnam Lambotharan portrait\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Kanagaratnam-Lambotharan-portrait.jpg\" alt=\"Kanagaratnam Lambotharan\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Kanagaratnam-Lambotharan-portrait.jpg 200w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Kanagaratnam-Lambotharan-portrait-50x75.jpg 50w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Kanagaratnam-Lambotharan-portrait-93x140.jpg 93w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Kanagaratnam-Lambotharan-portrait-166x250.jpg 166w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-57287\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kanagaratnam Lambotharan<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">South Africa\u2019s LTE plans<\/h3>\n<p>Although LTE roll-outs are being held up by the <a title=\"Department of Communications\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/289205-DoC-Department-of-Communications\">Department of Communications<\/a> in South Africa, <a title=\"MTN\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/226943-MTN\">MTN<\/a> have said that they plan to commercially launch LTE by the end of 2012 using re-farmed 1,800MHz spectrum.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"8ta\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/276092-8ta\">8ta<\/a>, <a title=\"Telkom\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227037-Telkom\">Telkom<\/a>\u2019s consumer mobile arm, has also said that it is upgrading its network to get ready for a potential commercial LTE launch in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom also has spectrum in the 1,800MHz band, but it hasn\u2019t been specific about its LTE plans.<\/p>\n<p>It is also expected that South Africa will use the 2.6GHz band for LTE, and eventually the 800MHz band once our migration from analogue to digital TV broadcasting is complete.<\/p>\n<p>Although the iPhone 5\u2019s 1,800MHz support matches up with MTN\u2019s LTE plans, Apple warns on its website that band support does not guarantee support on all LTE networks running on the same bands.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">What does this mean for iPhone 5 in South Africa?<\/h3>\n<p>This raises some important questions: will the iPhone 5\u2019s LTE work in South Africa? How does it fit in with operators\u2019 plans?
