{"id":602601,"date":"2025-07-15T08:23:41","date_gmt":"2025-07-15T06:23:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=602601"},"modified":"2025-07-15T08:24:05","modified_gmt":"2025-07-15T06:24:05","slug":"meta-platforms-to-build-gigawatt-size-ai-data-centres","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cloud-hosting\/602601-meta-platforms-to-build-gigawatt-size-ai-data-centres.html","title":{"rendered":"Meta Platforms to build gigawatt-size AI data centres"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company is building several massive data centres to power its artificial intelligence efforts, with the first one expected to come online next year.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re calling the first one Prometheus and it\u2019s coming online in \u201926,\u201d Zuckerberg wrote Monday in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@zuck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">post<\/a>\u00a0on his social platform Threads, referring to a project in Ohio. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re building multiple more titan clusters as well,\u201d he added, a nod to other planned data centre complexes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frustrated by the quality\u00a0of Meta\u2019s past AI efforts, Zuckerberg has been investing heavily in the energy, computing power and talent needed to compete in the fast-moving AI race. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In April, Meta\u00a0said\u00a0it could spend as much as $72 billion (R1.3 trillion) on capital expenditures this year, with a focus on AI and the data centres used to train and run the models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past several months, the CEO has personally recruited a team of experts seeking to achieve \u201csuperintelligence,\u201d the notion that machines can perform as well as or better than humans at many tasks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This kind of generative AI demands even more power, which has sparked an industrywide rush to build large data centres and secure expensive chips from suppliers like Nvidia Corp.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new Meta Superintelligence Labs team includes researchers poached from OpenAI, Google\u2019s DeepMind and other top AI companies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meta recently tapped Scale AI co-founder Alexandr Wang as chief AI officer, and\u00a0spent $14.3 billion\u00a0(R255 billion) on a 49% stake in his firm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zuckerberg also successfully courted former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, AI startup founder Daniel Gross, and Apple\u2019s Ruoming Pang \u2014 who was lured to Meta with a compensation package valued at more than $200 million, Bloomberg News\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zuckerberg on Monday described the data centres under development as multigigawatt \u201cclusters,\u201d which would rank among the largest in the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meta is building its biggest facility in Richland Parish, Louisiana, which the Facebook co-founder has touted as being nearly the size of Manhattan.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While most data centres today house only hundreds of megawatts of capacity apiece, several AI and major technology companies like OpenAI and Oracle are involved in plans to develop facilities capable of handling several gigawatts, or enough energy to power nearly 900,000 homes annually, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carboncollective.co\/sustainable-investing\/gigawatt-gw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carbon Collective<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That scale of power is seen as necessary to achieve superintelligence. In his post, Zuckerberg cited analyst firm SemiAnalysis as saying Meta is on track to be the first with a \u201csupercluster\u201d that houses more than a gigawatt of capacity.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shares of the Menlo Park, California-based company gained less than 1% to $723.56 at 2:20 p.m. in New York.
