{"id":607621,"date":"2025-08-20T17:21:46","date_gmt":"2025-08-20T15:21:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=607621"},"modified":"2025-08-21T08:26:03","modified_gmt":"2025-08-21T06:26:03","slug":"big-capitec-outage-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/banking\/607621-big-capitec-outage-2.html","title":{"rendered":"Big Capitec outage"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Capitec experienced a major technical outage on Wednesday, with some customers struggling to sign into its mobile banking app or web-based Internet banking, while others were unable to transact using these channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/downdetector.co.za\/status\/capitec\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/downdetector.co.za\/status\/capitec\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Downdetector<\/a> showed a steep increase in user reports of issues with Capitec from around 16:00. The majority of reports were related to issues with mobile banking and online banking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some users reported being unable to log into the app, with various errors including &#8220;We&#8217;re unable to verify your app installation&#8221; and &#8220;Connection issue: We&#8217;re having trouble connecting to Capitec.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others were able to sign into the app but found many of its functions were not working, including digital transactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Numerous affected users flooded X with complaints about the downtime. &#8220;Capitec app is down when I was about send girlfriend allowance,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/miShumoZA_\/status\/1958181594776097256\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/miShumoZA_\/status\/1958181594776097256\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one user said<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Capitec, I&#8217;m trying to buy electricity and I can&#8217;t because your app is down,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/nonto_xaba\/status\/1958185596175650864\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/nonto_xaba\/status\/1958185596175650864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">another complained<\/a>. &#8220;Capitec, send apologies properly, send us each R500,&#8221; a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ThubaneJustice\/status\/1958191307613937727\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ThubaneJustice\/status\/1958191307613937727\">third user joked<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bank responded to some users&#8217; complaints on its social media channels and sent a mobile app push notification stating that the app was offline. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our app isn&#8217;t working right now and we&#8217;re really sorry,&#8221; the notification said. &#8220;You can still pay with your card or visit a branch. We are fixing it and will keep you updated.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In quick feedback to MyBroadband, a Capitec spokesperson acknowledged that its app had been having &#8220;sign-in issues.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Clients can still use their cards to transact,&#8221; they reiterated. &#8220;The team is work on fixing the issue, once that\u2019s done I\u2019ll have more information to share.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The issue appeared to have been resolved early in the evening, with Capitec support agents <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CapitecBankSA\/status\/1958250019200381100\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CapitecBankSA\/status\/1958250019200381100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advising customers<\/a> that the app was back up and running. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bank&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/banking\/593118-capitec-online-banking-outage.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/banking\/593118-capitec-online-banking-outage.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">last major digital downtime<\/a> was at the end of April 2025. In that instance, the bank&#8217;s web-based Internet platform went offline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The graph below from Downdetector shows the rise in reports of issues on Capitec on Wednesday, 20 August
