Vodacom<\/a> plans to launch Long Term Evolution (LTE<\/a>) services in Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Durban before the end of the year, the company\u2019s new CEO, Shameel Joosub<\/a>, said at a media event held in Johannesburg today (28 September 2012).<\/p>\n

The red network also aims to have their whole network upgraded to be LTE ready within the next 12 months, Joosub said.<\/p>\n

Joosub said that they will roll out LTE in Cape Town as well, but that the roll-out is a little more difficult than the other three cities.\u00a0This is because they are still upgrading the equipment for LTE, Joosub said.<\/p>\n

These plans are similar to those announced by MTN earlier this week, who also said they are planning to launch LTE in Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Durban before the end of the year.<\/p>\n

MTN<\/a> SA\u2019s chief technology officer, Kanagaratnam Lamotharan<\/a>, said that they are looking at Cape Town but that there are challenges in \u201cre-farming\u201d the spectrum needed to roll out LTE in the mother city.<\/p>\n
