Vodacom Group<\/a>\u00a0chief executive officer\u00a0Shameel Joosub<\/a>\u00a0says that current\u00a0Cell C<\/a>\u00a0CEO, and former Vodacom CEO, \u00a0Alan Knott-Craig<\/a>\u00a0\u201chas his work cut out\u201d.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a round table event in Sandton on Friday (28 September), Joosub said:\u00a0 \u201c[Knott-Craig has] been a leader in the industry. He\u2019s a very clever guy, but he has got his work cut out.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stressed that Vodacom would stay competitive. \u201cVodacom is not going to roll-over,\u201d Joosub\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

The Vodacom chief noted that in some instances the company would react to its competitors, whereas in other instances it would lead.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe point is not just matching [competitor’s pricing], but giving your customers even better value,\u201d Joosub said. \u201cYou have to have a strategy and deliver on that strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since taking over at Cell C, Knott-Craig has implemented a number of price reductions in the data space, led by a pre-paid voice product and tariff plan called \u201c99 Cents For Real\u201d.<\/p>\n

On Friday, Vodacom said it would cut its international call rates to 51 destinations to 89 cents per minute, as of 1 October. Billing would be done on a per second basis, and subscribers would be charged R5 per month for the service.<\/p>\n
