{"id":609723,"date":"2025-09-05T11:00:30","date_gmt":"2025-09-05T09:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=609723"},"modified":"2025-09-05T11:01:18","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T09:01:18","slug":"six-years-and-r10-5-billion-later-a-big-win-for-discovery-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/banking\/609723-six-years-and-r10-5-billion-later-a-big-win-for-discovery-bank.html","title":{"rendered":"Six years and R10.5 billion later \u2014 A big win for Discovery Bank"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Discovery Bank reached a significant milestone between January 2025 and June 2025 \u2014 posting its first profit over a half-year period since launching in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a trading statement on Wednesday, Discovery Group said the digital-only bank had become profitable during the six months ending June 2025 and had therefore reached breakeven ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it still recorded a loss over the entire 2024\/25 financial year, the amount was about 82% to 87% lower than in 2023\/24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Considering the bank contributed a net loss of R454 million during that year, its latest annual loss should be around R59 million to R82 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Discovery previously also reported impressive customer and revenue growth between July and December 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Customers increased by 32% \u2014 climbing from 825,068 to 1.09 million, while accounts surged 35% from 1.93 million to 2.61 million. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also reported a profit before acquisition of new businesses of R69 million, compared to a loss of R154 million in the previous half-year in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bank&#8217;s first monthly breakeven was achieved in December 2024, which it said was ahead of its plan. By mid-February 2020, it had reached 180,000 customers, working out to about 770 per day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Discovery Group CEO Adrian Gore <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/banking\/339753-discovery-bank-missed-its-client-acquisition-target-but-adrian-gore-is-smiling-here-is-why.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/banking\/339753-discovery-bank-missed-its-client-acquisition-target-but-adrian-gore-is-smiling-here-is-why.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brushed off concerns<\/a> about slow growth, arguing that the focus was on attracting quality customers who engaged with the bank and its incentives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve seen that the client engagement levels have far exceeded expectations in all key areas, in particular the number of accounts per client,&#8221; Gore said at the time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We therefore remain markedly ahead of our targets and pleased with the performance and progress.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technical and security hiccups<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Adrian-Gore.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-556331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Adrian-Gore.webp 1200w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Adrian-Gore-600x338.webp 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Adrian-Gore-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Adrian Gore, Discovery Group CEO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The bank also encountered several technical issues and security problems in its first year. In October 2019, a security vulnerability allowed people to transact with Discovery Bank cards without entering the CVV \u2014 a key component for preventing fraud. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In November 2019, Discovery Bank customers had their full outstanding credit card balances mistakenly deducted from their debit accounts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People who were using the Discovery Gold credit card \u2014 issued under licence from FNB \u2014 also had problems migrating to Discovery Bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bank has made major strides since these technical teething problems in its infancy.
