{"id":61244,"date":"2012-10-07T15:00:58","date_gmt":"2012-10-07T13:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=61244"},"modified":"2012-10-07T15:02:36","modified_gmt":"2012-10-07T13:02:36","slug":"e-toll-advertising-battle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/technology\/61244-e-toll-advertising-battle.html","title":{"rendered":"E-toll advertising battle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After receiving numerous complaints in April 2012 about the e-toll prices displayed on road signs, the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (<a title=\"ASA\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/306365-ASA-Advertising-Standards-Authority\">ASA<\/a>) has said that it will not rule on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>In an e-mail sent to one complainant, an administrator for the ASA explained that this is because it does not consider road traffic signs as advertising.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, we therefore have no jurisdiction in this matter,\u201d the ASA said.<\/p>\n<p>The consumer complained to the ASA that only the cheapest tariff category is shown on the <a title=\"South African National Roads Agency\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/372008-SANRAL\">South African National Roads Agency<\/a>\u2019s e-toll road signs, suggesting that either the worst case be shown or multiple signs put up to show the other tariff classes.<\/p>\n<p>SANRAL published five categories of e-toll users in the government gazette dated 13 April 2012:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Category 1: E-tag user who is registered with the Agency<\/li>\n<li>Category 2: E-tag user who is not registered with the Agency<\/li>\n<li>Category 3: VLN [vehicle license number] user who is registered with the Agency<\/li>\n<li>Category 4: Alternate user<\/li>\n<li>Category 5: Day-pass user<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Category 1 users attract the lowest tolling rate, and these are the prices displayed on SANRAL\u2019s signage.
