{"id":61360,"date":"2012-10-04T22:53:41","date_gmt":"2012-10-04T20:53:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=61360"},"modified":"2012-10-08T17:25:51","modified_gmt":"2012-10-08T15:25:51","slug":"knott-craigs-4g-warning-to-vodacom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wireless\/61360-knott-craigs-4g-warning-to-vodacom.html","title":{"rendered":"Knott-Craig\u2019s 4G warning to Vodacom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Cell C\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/213919-Cell-C\">Cell C<\/a> CEO <a title=\"Alan Knott-Craig\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/224891-Alan-Knott-Craig-(Senior)\">Alan Knott-Craig<\/a> has sent a strong message to <a title=\"Vodacom\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227063-Vodacom\">Vodacom<\/a> that it should not think it will get away with calling its <a title=\"LTE\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/367212-Long-term-Evolution-(LTE)\">LTE<\/a> network &#8220;4G&#8221;, considering how vehemently Vodacom opposed Cell C\u2019s use of the term.<\/p>\n<p>Vodacom CEO <a title=\"Shameel Joosub\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/210076-Shameel-Joosub\">Shameel Joosub<\/a> recently said that the era of 4G has arrived. \u201cWe are [now] going into what we call 4G, and for 4G to work we need spectrum in the 800MHz, 1,800MHz or 2,600MHz bands, and that spectrum we do not have today,\u201d said Joosub.<\/p>\n<p>Joosub\u2019s comment raised a few eyebrows because of Vodacom\u2019s extensive battle against Cell C\u2019s 4G marketing campaign to promote its 21Mbps HSPA+ network.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011 Vodacom won an Advertising Standards Authority of SA (<a title=\"ASA\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/306365-ASA-Advertising-Standards-Authority\">ASA<\/a>) battle against Cell C\u2019s use of the term 4G.<\/p>\n<p>In its arguments Vodacom relied on the International Telecommunication Union\u2019s (<a title=\"ITU\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/289493-ITU-International-Telecommunications-Union\">ITU<\/a>\u2019s) definition that 4G only applies to LTE-Advanced and WirelessMAN-Advanced. The ITU also explicitly stated that it does not view LTE, WiMax and HSPA+ as 4G.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31956\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/31954-4g-network-fight-draws-to-a-close.html\/attachment\/cell-c-4gs-2\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31956\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31956\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31956\" title=\"Cell C 4Gs\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/cell-c-4gs.jpg\" alt=\"Cell C 4Gs\" width=\"600\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/cell-c-4gs.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/cell-c-4gs-100x42.jpg 100w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/cell-c-4gs-185x78.jpg 185w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-31956\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cell C 4Gs<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Shoe is now on the other foot<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When asked about this apparent change from the company, Vodacom said that there is no change in what they see as 4G, adding that by strict definition LTE is actually 3.9G and LTE Advanced will be 4G.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, more and more operators and device manufacturers around the world are using the terms interchangeably. Modems and handsets are already being labeled as 4G,\u201d explained Joosub.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo avoid customer confusion and prevent South Africa getting out of step with the terminology used in the rest of the world, we may have to take the practical decision to adopt the term 4G.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curiously this is the exact same argument which Cell C used during the ASA hearings in 2011, but at the time Vodacom attacked this view arguing that the fact that international operators are using the term 4G is no excuse for trying to hoodwink consumers into thinking they are getting something they are not.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_61256\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wireless\/61360-knott-craigs-4g-warning-to-vodacom.html\/attachment\/joosub-vs-knott-craig\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-61256\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61256\" class=\"size-full wp-image-61256\" title=\"Shameel Joosub vs Alan Knott-craig\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Joosub-vs-Knott-craig.jpg\" alt=\"Shameel Joosub vs Alan Knott-craig\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Joosub-vs-Knott-craig.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Joosub-vs-Knott-craig-100x66.jpg 100w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Joosub-vs-Knott-craig-185x123.jpg 185w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Joosub-vs-Knott-craig-250x166.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-61256\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shameel Joosub vs Alan Knott-craig<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Warning to Vodacom<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Knott-Craig told MyBroadband that Vodacom has made its 4G bed, and now they have to sleep in it.<\/p>\n<p>The Cell C CEO said the ITU\u2019s definition states that LTE is not 4G, and if Vodacom is calling their LTE service 4G they can expect action from Cell C.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will not stand for Vodacom having it both ways,&#8221;
