{"id":614739,"date":"2025-10-20T10:49:13","date_gmt":"2025-10-20T08:49:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=614739"},"modified":"2025-10-20T12:56:32","modified_gmt":"2025-10-20T10:56:32","slug":"amazon-outage-leads-to-widespread-internet-blackout-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cloud-hosting\/614739-amazon-outage-leads-to-widespread-internet-blackout-in-south-africa.html","title":{"rendered":"Amazon outage leads to widespread Internet blackout in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Internet users worldwide are reporting issues trying to access services hosted by Amazon Web Services (AWS), with impacted platforms including Bash, Zoom, and SnapChat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other major impacted companies and services include Atlassian, Coinbase, Perplexity AI, the Epic Games Store, Amazon Prime Video, and Roblox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AWS has acknowledged the issues on its <a href=\"https:\/\/health.aws.amazon.com\/health\/status\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/health.aws.amazon.com\/health\/status\">Service Health page<\/a>, saying the outage has disrupted its DynamoDB service, which had a knock-on affect on other AWS services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We can confirm significant error rates for requests made to the DynamoDB endpoint in the US-East-1 Region,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This issue also affects other AWS Services in the US-East-1 Region. During this time, customers may be unable to create or update Support Cases.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It added that engineers were immediately engaged and are actively working on mitigating the issue, while determining and understanding the root cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other impacted AWS services include AWS Config, Database Migration Service, Elemental, Lambda, CloudFront, Elastic Cloud Compute, Elastic Kubernetes Service, and Interactive Video Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it should be noted that the list of other impacted AWS services continues to get longer MyBroadband contacted Amazon for comment, and it directed us to its <a href=\"https:\/\/health.aws.amazon.com\/health\/status\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AWS Health Dashboard<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We have identified a potential root cause for error rates for the DynamoDB APIs in the US-EAST-1 Region,&#8221; it stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Based on our investigation, the issue appears to be related to DNS resolution of the DynamoDB API endpoint in US-EAST-1. We are working on multiple parallel paths to accelerate recovery.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amazon said the issue also affects other AWS Services in the US-EAST-1 Region. Global services or features that rely on US-EAST-1 endpoints such as IAM updates and DynamoDB Global tables may also be experiencing issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;During this time, customers may be unable to create or update Support Cases. We recommend customers continue to retry any failed requests,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reports of issues at AWS started emerging at around 08:45 on Monday, 20 October 2025, on outage reporting platform <a href=\"https:\/\/downdetector.co.za\/status\/aws-amazon-web-services\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/downdetector.co.za\/status\/aws-amazon-web-services\/\">Downdetector.co.za<\/a>. Many users have posted about the challenges on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;A massive internet outage is affecting popular gaming apps like Dead By Daylight, Fortnite, and Roblox,&#8221; one user <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/playswave_com\/status\/1980191654092140631\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/playswave_com\/status\/1980191654092140631\">posted<\/a> on X\/Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Major apps down. Many of the largest apps are reportedly experiencing major issues.
