{"id":615013,"date":"2025-10-22T08:47:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T06:47:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=615013"},"modified":"2025-10-22T08:49:27","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T06:49:27","slug":"chatgpt-atlas-web-browser-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/ai\/615013-chatgpt-atlas-web-browser-announced.html","title":{"rendered":"ChatGPT Atlas web browser announced"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>OpenAI unveiled its first artificial intelligence-powered web browser, putting the ChatGPT maker in competition on a new front with Alphabet\u2019s Google.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The browser, called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chatgpt.com\/atlas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ChatGPT Atlas<\/a>, is designed to be a more personalized web experience and also field tasks such as booking flights and editing documents on a user\u2019s behalf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each time a user visits a website within the browser, they will see an \u201cAsk ChatGPT\u201d that pulls up a sidebar to engage with what\u2019s on the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The user might, say, open up a movie review, then ask ChatGPT to summarize it, or find a recipe and ask ChatGPT to help order the ingredients for it online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is an AI-powered web browser built around ChatGPT,\u201d OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman said during a livestreamed event on Tuesday. He said AI \u201crepresents a rare, once-a-decade opportunity\u201d to rethink the browser.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Atlas will be available globally on macOS to start, the company said, with plans to expand to Windows, iOS and Android \u201csoon.\u201d More advanced AI agent features will only be available to paid ChatGPT Plus and Pro users for now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OpenAI joins a growing number of companies that are using AI to reimagine the web browser, a product that dates back to the 1990s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perplexity AI recently rolled out Comet, an AI browser that\u2019s designed to act as a digital assistant, automating tasks for users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firefox.com\/en-US\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mozilla<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opera.com\/ai\/articles\/what-you-can-do-with-aria-operas-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Opera<\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.diabrowser.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Browser Company<\/a>\u00a0are also integrating more AI features into their respective browsers, Firefox, Opera, and Arc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Google\u2019s shares declined as much as 4.8% on the news. In September, Google\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-09-18\/google-adds-gemini-to-chrome-after-dodging-forced-sale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">incorporated its Gemini AI model<\/a>\u00a0into the Chrome browser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among other tasks, Google\u2019s AI can respond to requests to provide explanations of the web pages visited, condense information across multiple tabs and even bring back some of the websites previously closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Google\u2019s move came two weeks after a US judge\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-09-02\/google-not-required-to-sell-chrome-in-court-antitrust-ruling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ruled against a government proposal<\/a>\u00a0that would have forced the company to sell off Chrome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a court hearing, executives from Perplexity and OpenAI said they\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-04-22\/openai-would-buy-google-s-chrome-browser-chatgpt-chief-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">would have been interested
