{"id":617439,"date":"2025-11-08T06:59:05","date_gmt":"2025-11-08T04:59:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=617439"},"modified":"2025-11-08T07:00:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T05:00:13","slug":"dstv-adding-a-new-channel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/617439-dstv-adding-a-new-channel.html","title":{"rendered":"DStv adding a new channel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>DStv will run a SuperSport channel dedicated to the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) on its pay-TV platform in December 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canal+ Africa CEO David Mignot met with CAF president Patrice Motsepe at SuperSport&#8217;s Studio 6 on Thursday, 6 November, to announce that the tournament will be broadcast on DStv in various languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new owner of MultiChoice said it helped secure the CAF broadcast rights. Canal+ will show the CAF Afcon 2025, which is being hosted by Morocco, from 21 December 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding language options, the broadcasts will be available &#8220;in French, English, Portuguese, and indigenous languages, following SuperSport&#8217;s deal for English-speaking broadcast rights.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our newly-forged merger with MultiChoice has already unlocked opportunities and benefits for our customers,&#8221; Mignot said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This year&#8217;s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 is a great demonstration of the power and potential of this common ambition: bringing together our expertise to offer unprecedented coverage.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that broadcasting the competition in several languages is a strong way for Canal+ to build a closer relationship with its viewers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For all these reasons, our subscribers will be part of the most spectacular celebration of African football,&#8221; said Mignot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>French media giant Groupe Canal+ took control of MultiChoice on Monday, 22 September 2025, after the last suspensive conditions of its mandatory takeover were met, making its offer unconditional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canal+ presented an offer to acquire MultiChoice last year after exceeding the 35% shareholding threshold stipulated in the South African Companies Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The French media firm acquired its first 6.5% stake in MultiChoice in October 2020 and steadily increased its shareholding over several years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following negotiations with the MultiChoice board and a dispute with the Takeover Regulation Panel, Canal+ offered R125 per share for all stock it didn&#8217;t already own, valuing MultiChoice at R55 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Good news about DStv channels<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/David-Mignon-MultiChoice-CanalPlus.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-611806\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/David-Mignon-MultiChoice-CanalPlus.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/David-Mignon-MultiChoice-CanalPlus-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/David-Mignon-MultiChoice-CanalPlus-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">David Mignot, Canal+ Africa CEO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In an October 2025 interview, Mignot stated that Canal+&#8217;s library of European content was unrivalled and that DStv customers can expect a significant amount of new content to launch on the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the firm also creates 4,000 hours of African content in up to 15 languages each year. This content will be added to MultiChoice&#8217;s approximately 6,000 hours of annual locally produced content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Combined, we will provide roughly 10,000 hours per year in 20 to 35 languages,&#8221; said Mignot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;So, in a 10- to 15-year period, we are building up a catalogue of more than 100,000 to 150,000 hours, and then we will be able to make that content travel.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the final result will be an extensive catalogue that is available to a larger audience through dubbing and rescripting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it hadn&#8217;t confirmed any new channels at the time, MultiChoice had already started introducing new content on existing channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DStv now offers select French Ligue 1 football matches, broadcast live on SuperSport, through its partnership with Canal+.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ligue 1 is France&#8217;s top professional football league.
