{"id":62352,"date":"2012-11-10T12:21:57","date_gmt":"2012-11-10T10:21:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=62352"},"modified":"2012-11-10T12:23:08","modified_gmt":"2012-11-10T10:23:08","slug":"10mbps-minimum-broadband-speed-for-sa-dfa-ceo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadband\/62352-10mbps-minimum-broadband-speed-for-sa-dfa-ceo.html","title":{"rendered":"10Mbps minimum broadband speed for SA: DFA CEO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dark Fibre Africa (<a title=\"DFA\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/352528-Dark-Fibre-Africa-(DFA)\">DFA<\/a>) CEO <a title=\"Gustav Smit\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/338981-Gustav-Smit\">Gustav Smit<\/a> is of the opinion that the absolute minimum broadband speeds in South Africa should be 10Mbps for residential customers and 40Mbps for business customers.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the 2012 MyBroadband Conference, Smit said that if someone tries to sell you a 1Mbps or 4Mbps service for your office, you should \u201cchase that oke away\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not the way we should do it in South Africa. We will never get this economy growing if we sell one and two and four megabit links,\u201d said Smit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSouth Africans simply don\u2019t know what 20Mbps or 100Mbps to the home means. An opportunity needs to be created for users to test drive serious broadband, and ISPs need to play a leading role in mobilising communities,\u201d Smit said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enough fibre available already<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_61932\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/general\/61890-2012-mybroadband-conference-in-photos.html\/attachment\/gustav-smit-4\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-61932\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61932\" class=\"size-full wp-image-61932\" title=\"Gustav Smit\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Gustav-Smit2.jpg\" alt=\"Gustav Smit\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Gustav-Smit2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Gustav-Smit2-100x66.jpg 100w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Gustav-Smit2-185x123.jpg 185w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Gustav-Smit2-250x166.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-61932\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gustav Smit<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The DFA CEO dismissed the argument that there is not enough fibre infrastructure to support these higher speeds.<\/p>\n<p>The chief executive of DFA said that, between major fibre operators \u2013 including <a title=\"Broadband Infraco\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/209673-Broadband-Infraco\">Broadband Infraco<\/a>, DFA, <a title=\"Neotel\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/226979-Neotel\">Neotel<\/a> and <a title=\"Telkom\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227037-Telkom\">Telkom<\/a> \u2013 South Africa already has a substantial amount of fibre waiting to be adopted.<\/p>\n<p>Smit said that DFA alone deployed 6,000km of fibre in the major metropolitan areas which goes past 120,000 buildings.
