{"id":623640,"date":"2025-12-22T14:39:17","date_gmt":"2025-12-22T12:39:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=623640"},"modified":"2025-12-22T14:52:36","modified_gmt":"2025-12-22T12:52:36","slug":"former-south-african-internet-giant-selling-7-data-centres","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cloud-hosting\/623640-former-south-african-internet-giant-selling-7-data-centres.html","title":{"rendered":"Former South African Internet giant selling 7 data centres"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Competition Commission has conditionally approved Mauritius-based Open Access Data Centres (OADC) buying seven data centres from NTT Data in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The commission&#8217;s view is that the proposed transaction was unlikely to substantially lessen or prevent competition in any market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;To address public interest concerns, the acquiring group has tendered a condition to implement an HDP [historically disadvantaged people] transaction,&#8221; the commission said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the transaction, the data centres on sale in South Africa will become the property of OADC Propco and OADC Opco. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OADC is a wholly owned subsidiary of another Mauritius-based company, West Indian Ocean Cable Company Holding Company Limited, a long-distance terrestrial and subsea fibre network operator. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OADC already has several data centres located in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town and provides colocation, connectivity and general services to third parties in South Africa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The transaction will see OADC acquiring seven NTT Data SA data centres. These are located in Bloemfontein, Cape Town, East London, Bryanston, Johannesburg (Parklands), Gqeberha, and Umhlanga. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The target assets include all associated infrastructure, equipment, supplier contracts, and lease agreements at each of these locations, as well as the Parklands Data Centre property.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The data centres provide similar services to OADC, including colocation services, network and connectivity services, and data centre implementation and management services. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The transaction does not appear to include NTT Data SA&#8217;s newest and largest data centre \u2014 the 12MW Johannesburg 1 facility \u2014 which was completed in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NTT Data is South Africa&#8217;s oldest data centre operator and among its oldest IT firms, although it has long been under foreign control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally called Dimension Data, the company was founded by Keith McLachlan, Werner Sievers, Jeremy Ord, Peter Neale, and Kevin Hamilton in 1983. It was listed on the JSE in 1987.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among its earliest major milestones was becoming the official distributor of Cisco Systems equipment in South Africa in 1991.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Acquisition by Japanese firm<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Dimension-Data-offices.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-480273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Dimension-Data-offices.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Dimension-Data-offices-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Dimension-Data-offices-800x533.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Dimension-Data-offices-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dimension Data reception<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the next two decades, it would expand its operations into several more countries, including through a number of acquisitions, and list on the London Stock Exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By September 2009, its annual revenue was around $4 billion (R33.5 billion). In 2010, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation acquired the company for \u00a32.1 billion (R23 billion). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At that point, it was the most valuable company listed on the JSE.
