{"id":623758,"date":"2025-12-27T09:05:13","date_gmt":"2025-12-27T07:05:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=623758"},"modified":"2025-12-27T10:23:12","modified_gmt":"2025-12-27T08:23:12","slug":"arrest-in-major-crypto-exchange-hacking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cryptocurrency\/623758-arrest-in-major-crypto-exchange-hacking.html","title":{"rendered":"Arrest in major crypto exchange hacking"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Coinbase Global chief executive officer Brian Armstrong said that a former customer service agent for the largest US crypto exchange was arrested in India, months after hackers bribed customer service representatives to gain access to customer information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\u00a0May, the company said hackers bribed contractors or employees outside the US to steal sensitive customer data and demanded a<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>$20 million ransom, in one of the most high-profile security breaches of a crypto trading platform. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time, San Francisco-based Coinbase estimated the incident could cost up to $400 million (R6.67 billion) to remedy. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A spokesperson of Coinbase confirmed the arrest in India and added that the news follows the exchange\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coinbase.com\/blog\/brining-an-alleged-scammer-to-justice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent work<\/a>&nbsp;with the Brooklyn District Attorney\u2019s Office, in which the prosecutors filed charges against a Brooklyn man who was accused of running \u201ca long-running impersonation scheme targeting Coinbase customers.\u201d &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shares of Coinbase fell about 1.2% to $236.79 on Friday.
