{"id":6255,"date":"2008-12-05T11:37:00","date_gmt":"2008-12-05T09:37:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2008-12-05T11:37:00","modified_gmt":"2008-12-05T09:37:00","slug":"eskom-stops-nuclear-plans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/technology\/6255-eskom-stops-nuclear-plans.html","title":{"rendered":"Eskom stops nuclear plans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Power utility Eskom on Friday said that it was &quot;not in a position to invest in nuclear&quot;, and has terminated the talks it was holding with global nuclear technology providers Westinghouse and Areva. <\/p>\n<p>The utility said it has decided &quot;not to proceed with the proposed investment in Nuclear-1 project due to the magnitude of the investment&quot; required. <\/p>\n<p>Nuclear technology, which is known to demand high upfront capital expenditure, was expected to contribute up to 20 000MW to the country&#8217;s power grid by 2025. <\/p>\n<p>Eskom said the proposed Nuclear 1 project would have resulted in the construction of the country&#8217;s second pressurised water reactor nuclear power plant.
