In 2025, Cybertruck sales plummeted 48% to 20,237. Tesla has blamed uncertainty from shifting trade, tariff, and fiscal policy as factors impacting its overall EV sales.

Divisive design with outstanding engineering

Tesla Cybertruck being loaded onto a flatbed truck at OR Tambo International Airport. Photographer: TheRealDivan (Instagram)

The Cybertruck has been plagued by many mechanical and electrical issues. In 2025, Tesla recalled 46,000 units over a trim panel that could detach from the Cybertruck and endanger other cars.

Recalls have also been issued to fix problems with its rearview camera, windshield wipers, and accelerator pedal pads.

The Cybertruck’s Blade Runner-inspired design has also divided automotive journalists, industry experts, and the general public. However, it is undoubtedly impressive from an engineering perspective.

The top-spec triple-motor Cyberbeast model can accelerate from standstill to 100km/h in roughly 2.7 seconds, despite tipping the scales at 3.1 tonnes.

The discontinued entry-level model with a single motor could achieve the same in approximately 6.6 seconds.

The Cybertruck also boasts a 48-volt low-voltage electrical architecture for components like its infotainment system, lights, and air conditioning, rather than a conventional 12-volt system.

The higher-voltage cables require less current, allowing for thinner wires weighing around 73% less than the equivalent 12V system. That reduces input costs and improves energy efficiency.

The Cybertruck’s steer-by-wire system also makes it very easy to manoeuvre, especially for a vehicle of its size.

All-wheel drive models are also capable of towing up to 4.99 tonnes, although real-world tests have shown that this could cut range to around 200km.

The Cybetruck’s stainless steel exoskeleton is also dent-resistant and capable of stopping small-calibre bullets, including 9mm rounds.

The shatter-resistant glass windows can withstand impacts from hail the size of a baseball, assuming they were not weakened beforehand by a hammer impact to the Cybertruck’s door.

The material was incredibly difficult to work with, as it cannot be stamped easily into compound curves, and required Tesla to invent a new laser-cutting and air-bending process to shape the steel.

[29366
87951,67290,11373,20719,61983
post-627877","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-motoring","tag-electric-bakkies","tag-electric-vehicles-evs","tag-elon-musk","tag-tesla","tag-tesla-cybertruck
