Apple<\/a> announced the iPad Mini at a special event in San Jose, California on Tuesday evening (23 October 2012).<\/p>\n

The device competes head-on with the likes of the Google<\/a> Nexus 7 (which is made by Asus<\/a>), Amazon<\/a>‘s Kindle Fire, and the Samsung<\/a> Galaxy Tab 2 7.0.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, Amazon’s content ecosystem that the Kindle Fire depends on is not available in South Africa, nor is the device itself available through an official distribution channel.<\/p>\n

For this reason it is excluded from the comparison below.<\/p>\n

The Nexus 7 is available through Asus’ South African distribution channel at a recommended retail price of R2,999 for the 16GB model. It is Wi-Fi only and the cheaper 8GB model has not yet been announced locally.<\/p>\n

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 has been available in South Africa for somewhat longer than the Nexus 7 and the model with both Wi-Fi and 3G support sells for R4,789 from Samsung SA’s own online store.<\/p>\n
