Massmart will launch its third Walmart store at the East Point Shopping Centre in Boksburg in Gauteng on 28 February 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The launch comes about three months after the first two stores opened their doors at Clearwater Mall in Roodepoort and Fourways Mall in Johannesburg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As was the case with those two stores, the new store will occupy the same site as a shuttered Game branch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Game Boksburg is one of at least 13 of the brand’s stores that have closed down in the last three years. It shut down in July 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Massmart recently also confirmed that it was considering closing around 20 other Game stores in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape to potentially redevelop them into Walmart stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It explained that the potential closures and conversions would be subject to engagement with the affected employees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The retailer maintains that the conversion of the Game stores should not be seen as a sign that it plans to shut down that business completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We continue to invest in the future growth of Game, including through the rollout of our pantry merchandise proposition, which is enjoying high demand from Game customers,” Massmart said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It emphasised that the stores being considered for closure make up a “small” part of its total portfolio in South Africa, which currently stands around 120 stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Massmart has played its cards close to its chest when it comes to details around its strategy for Walmart, apart from stating the brand has “ambitious” plans for 2026. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The intention is to increase our provincial representation, but we would prefer not to signal our specific intent to competitors at this time,” the retailer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Massmart has observed incredibly high levels of consumer interest in its stores. Early impressions of its first two Walmart stores have been largely positive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, many MyBroadband readers have been underwhelmed by the product selection compared to its US stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walmart in South Africa offers groceries, fast-moving consumer goods, electronics, clothing, and other items available at major South African retailers like Checkers Hyper or Massmart’s own Makro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the US, some Walmart stores offer large departments with pharmaceuticals, garden products, including live plants, tyres and automotive components, and even guns and ammunition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aside from a handful of exclusive appliances, toys, and US candy and confectionery, Walmart’s main focus in South Africa is consistent competitive pricing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The retailer is aiming to offer the best prices on typical monthly shopping baskets throughout the year, instead of using frequent limited-time promotions and discounts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

MyBroadband’s early pricing comparisons found that Walmart was cheaper than Checkers and Pick n Pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In January 2026, Massmart said it was able to maintain a consistent price gap on items that it had been tracking since launch.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While its rival in the US, Amazon, has also focused heavily on well-priced groceries and FMCG products on its South African marketplace, it has yet to launch fresh food items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walmart also offers an on-demand delivery service that is currently not available from Massmart’s other brands, clearly intended to take on rival platforms like Sixty60 and Pick n Pay Asap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
