While engagement actually decreased by 9% year-on-year, the improvements are more evident over a multi-year period.

Jobseeker engagement for IT roles increased by 3% quarter-on-quarter, and over two years, engagement in the IT sector has grown by a significant 29%.

CareerJunction’s report also highlighted critical skills gaps across many sectors, including IT, with many employers struggling to fill roles that require specific skills.

“This imbalance continues to limit productivity, slow growth, and increase recruitment pressure across multiple sectors,” it said.

Regarding skills shortages in the IT sector, CareerJunction highlighted three roles that employers are struggling to fill.

The first is database administrators, which are critical for managing and securing complex ICT environments and ensuring business continuity.

Software developers are also in high demand as companies continue to invest in system modernisation and automation, and finding suitable candidates is a challenge for many employers.

Lastly, the availability of solutions architects, who are key to designing scalable IT and cloud-based systems, is low compared to the demand for the skill.

“Rapid technological change — driven by automation, artificial intelligence, and digital platforms — has shifted employer expectations faster than the workforce can adapt,” CareerJunction said.

“As a result, skills gaps are widening rather than narrowing in certain areas.”

The firm also highlighted emigration, or the “brain drain” of experienced South African professionals seeking opportunities abroad, as a driver of IT skills gaps.

Average salaries for 20 tech jobs in South Africa

Earlier this month, Pnet released its Job Market Trends Report for January 2026, in which it highlighted average salary ranges for various jobs in South Africa, including 20 roles in the IT sector.

Pnet said its salary guide is designed to keep employers and jobseekers informed about remuneration trends in a shifting labour market.

“Based on actual salary offerings from thousands of vacancies posted across our job sites, this guide delivers tangible, data-driven insights into current salary trends,” it said.

“While remuneration may vary by region, level of experience and specific skill sets, the insights provided offer a reliable indicator for understanding market-related salary expectations in 2026.”

According to its data, tech roles with the highest average salaries include systems analysts, solutions architects, C# developers, .NET developers, and IT managers.

Average salaries for systems analysts and solutions architects start at R41,667, and reach R50,000 and R52,500, respectively.

C# developers and .NET developers earn similar average salaries in South Africa, ranging from R40,000 to R50,000.

Of the five highest-paying roles on average, the lower bound for IT managers is the lowest at R39,981.
