{"id":63010,"date":"2012-11-04T01:32:39","date_gmt":"2012-11-03T23:32:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=63010"},"modified":"2012-11-04T01:34:09","modified_gmt":"2012-11-03T23:34:09","slug":"gr8signal-measuring-sas-mobile-networks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/63010-gr8signal-measuring-sas-mobile-networks.html","title":{"rendered":"gr8signal: measuring SA\u2019s mobile networks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LucidView, a company that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lucidview.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">specialises in network data analysis<\/a>, and MyBroadband, a company that specialises in awesome, have launched gr8signal &#8211; a service to independently measure mobile network coverage in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Gr8signal\u2019s initial release is for Android only, and lets users anonymously report whether they are receiving good signal quality from their cellular provider.<\/p>\n<p>Developed with the help of Toby Kurien, the <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=net.lucidview.mybb\" target=\"_blank\">gr8signal app<\/a> gathers data such as the cellular signal strength and GPS co-ordinates reported by an Android smartphone and sends them to LucidView\u2019s servers.<\/p>\n<p>The data is processed and displayed on a map on the <a href=\"http:\/\/gr8signal.co.za\/\" target=\"_blank\">gr8signal website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tim Haak, lead developer at LucidView, explained that new data is pulled to the map every few hours, so users won\u2019t see the map updating in real-time.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_63018\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-63018\" class=\"size-full wp-image-63018\" title=\"gr8signal Android screenshot\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/gr8signal-Android-screenshot.jpg\" alt=\"gr8signal Android screenshot\" width=\"240\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/gr8signal-Android-screenshot.jpg 240w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/gr8signal-Android-screenshot-52x75.jpg 52w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/gr8signal-Android-screenshot-98x140.jpg 98w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/gr8signal-Android-screenshot-176x250.jpg 176w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-63018\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">gr8signal Android screenshot<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He also emphasised that the only moderately personally identifying piece of data collected are device identifiers, which are needed mainly to be able to clean up data from a misbehaving device, Haak said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe take privacy very seriously,\u201d Haak said. \u201cWe collect as little as possible personal information and anonymise everything as best we can before displaying it on the site,\u201d Haak said.<\/p>\n<p>Other things the app handles conservatively are cellular data and the device\u2019s battery.<\/p>\n<p>Haak explained that by default the app only uploads the data it has gathered when connected to a Wi-Fi network.
