South African motorists could be in for a shock R8-per-litre petrol price increase in April 2026, BizNews’s<\/a> Alec Hogg predicts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hogg says the rand cost of a barrel of Brent Crude oil surged from R954 to R1,328 this week, which, combined with the rand weakening, will result in a hefty price hike in April if current levels hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The higher price of oil is particularly important here in South Africa. Our petrol and diesel prices are based on the rand cost of oil,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That has surged this week, and the rand weakened. That’s a jump of 40% since the war began and translates into an R8-a-litre shock.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paisley Nardini, portfolio manager at Simplify Asset Management, said oil could easily surpass $100 (R1,661) per barrel if the tensions in the region persist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bloomberg economics chief Jenny Welsh agrees. She believes the price of oil could reach $108 (R1,794) per barrel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If there are going to be sustained, persistent disruptions to energy facilities in the region of the Strait of Hormuz, that could actually lead oil prices to top $100. We estimate reaching up to $108,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That’s not where markets are today, and we think that’s probably because they think that these will be short-term disruptions.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Welsh added that the conflict in Iran doesn’t look like it’s anywhere close to ending. The predicted R8-per-litre increase will hit South African motorists hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on March 2026’s fuel price, the predicted adjustment would increase the inland price of unleaded 93 and unleaded 95 to around R28.19 per litre and R28.30 per litre, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the prediction holds, motorists with diesel-powered vehicles in South Africa will pay around R26.53 per litre for 500ppm diesel and R26.60 per litre for 50ppm diesel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States and Israel launched a large-scale offensive against Iran on 28 February 2026, putting oil supplies in the region at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While much of Iran’s oil exports go directly to China, the conflict has led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20% of the global oil supply flows every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Tuesday, 2 March 2026, senior advisor to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards’ commander-in-chief, Ebrahim Jabari, warned that vessels travelling through the strait will be set alight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The strait is closed. If anyone tries to pass, the heroes of the Revolutionary Guards and the regular navy will set those ships ablaze,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another factor set to increase fuel prices in South Africa, although far less significant, is the impending fuel tax hikes set to take effect on 1 April 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finance minister Enoch Godongwana proposed increasing the Road Accident Fund (RAF) levy and general fuel levy (GFL) while presenting his 2026 Budget Speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 1 April 2026, the GFL is set to increase by R0.9 per litre for petrol and R0.08 for diesel. At the same time, the RAF levy will increase by R0.07 per litre for both fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Fuel prices have remained subdued, and it is proposed that from 1 April, the general fuel levy is increased by less than inflation to R4.10\/litre for petrol and R3.93\/litre for diesel,” Treasury said in its budget review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The RAF levy will be increased by 7c\/litre to R2.25\/litre from 1 April, in line with expected inflation, while the customs and excise levies remain unchanged.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Africa last increased the RAF levy in the 2021\/22 financial year, specifically on 1 April 2021, meaning this will be the first hike in five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse’s (Outa) CEO Wayne Duvenage said the increase will mean that motorists contribute more to a flawed system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The annual fuel levy for the RAF contributes over R45 billion per annum, which falls well below the long-term provisions for the fund at R387.4 billion, and is expected to increase to R426.6 billion by 2028\/29,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
