Stats SA released the results of its Census 2011 today (30 October 2012), showing that the number of cellphones in South Africa increased significantly, while the number of landline telephones plummeted over the last decade.<\/p>\n

According to the Census 2011 results, the proportion of households owning cellphones significantly increased from 31.9% in 2001 to 88.9% in 2011.<\/p>\n

Bad news for Telkom<\/a> is that the proportion using landlines decreased from 23.9% in 2001 to 14.5% in 2011.<\/p>\n

The Census 2011 results further revealed that the percentage of households with a computer increased from 8.5% in 2001 to 21.4% in 2011.<\/p>\n

The proportion of households with a television increased from 52.6% in 2001 to 74.5% over the last decade, but the percentage of households with a radio declined from 72.1% to 67.5%.<\/p>\n
