Consumers now expect real-time tracking, next-day delivery, and seamless service. Meeting those expectations is no small task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In fact, global logistics research consistently shows that last-mile delivery can account for over 50% of total delivery costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In South Africa, the challenge is even greater. Logistics providers must navigate traffic congestion in major cities, security risks in certain areas, inconsistent addressing systems, and the logistical complexity of servicing both densely populated urban environments and geographically dispersed rural communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Against this backdrop, logistics companies are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence to help solve some of these challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
AI is transforming logistics operations by enabling companies to analyse vast amounts of operational data and optimise decision-making. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Through machine learning and advanced analytics, logistics providers can improve route planning, forecast demand patterns, and allocate delivery resources far more efficiently than traditional systems allowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the most significant applications of AI lies in dynamic route optimisation. Historically, delivery routes were planned using relatively static schedules. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My own research into consumer satisfaction with last-mile delivery in South African e-commerce highlights how delivery reliability, speed, and clear communication significantly influence how consumers perceive online retailers and whether they remain loyal customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In many ways, the delivery experience has become the final moment of truth in online shopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, while technology is transforming logistics operations, it is only part of the solution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The industry also requires a new generation of supply chain professionals who understand how to implement and manage these technologies effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is where higher education institutions play an increasingly important role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As logistics becomes more technologically sophisticated, supply chain education must evolve accordingly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Graduates entering the industry need both traditional operational knowledge and the digital competencies required to operate within modern, data-driven supply chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At IIE Rosebank College, a brand of the Independent Institute of Education (The IIE), there has been a growing focus on preparing students for this evolving landscape. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Within the Faculty of Commerce, supply chain and logistics programmes increasingly emphasise the strategic role of data analytics, digital logistics systems, and technology-enabled supply chain decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today\u2019s supply chain professionals must be able to interpret data, optimise complex systems, and understand how technology can enhance operational performance across the entire supply network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe real competitive advantage in logistics will not come from technology alone, but from the people who understand how to use it strategically.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
South Africa occupies a strategically important position within Africa\u2019s logistics landscape. As regional trade grows and digital commerce continues to expand, efficient logistics systems will play a critical role in supporting economic development and enabling businesses to reach new markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Artificial intelligence will undoubtedly accelerate innovation within the sector. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Companies that successfully integrate AI into their logistics operations will be able to reduce operational costs, improve delivery performance, and remain competitive in an increasingly digital marketplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
