The yearly broadband survey conducted by MyBroadband was completed recently and part of this survey were speed tests conducted by consumers. The results from these speed tests shed some light on how the various local broadband services perform.

Fixed line services<\/strong><\/p>\n

The best performing fixed line broadband service was Telkom’s ADSL 4Mbps service with an average local download speed of 2751Kbps and an international download speed of 1312Kbps.  <\/p>\n

Neotel’s NeoConnect Prime service came in second with a local download speed of 565Kbps and an international downlink average of 496Kbps. iBurst was third with local and international download speeds of 549Kbps and 283Kbps respectively.<\/p>\n

The other fixed line broadband services, in order of performance, were Telkom WiMax, Telkom DSL 512, Sentech MyWiress, Telkom DSL 384 and Neotel NeoConnect Lite.<\/p>\n

The soon to be released Neotel NeoFlex, which performed very well in testing with downlink speeds in excess of 1Mbps, is also a service to watch in 2009.<\/p>\n

Mobile broadband services <\/strong><\/p>\n

In the mobile broadband department Vodacom’s 3.6Mbps HSDPA service reigned supreme with an average local download speed of 1254Kbps and an international download speed of 1012Kbps.<\/p>\n

MTN’s HSDPA service was a close second with a local download speed of 1202Kbps and an international speed of 872Kbps while iBurst’s wireless service was third with local and international download speeds of 549Kbps and 283Kbps respectively.  <\/p>\n

The new kid on the block, Telkom’s 3G\/HSDPA service, was not widely available by the time of the survey and could therefore not be accurately measured. Initial feedback from users however indicates that the average speeds achieved on this service are significantly higher than that of its competitors and it is definitely a service to watch in future.<\/p>\n
