The Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, one of the most prestigious game reserves in South Africa, employs a suite of high-tech anti-poaching equipment and devices across its entire perimeter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2024, the reserve revealed that it had experienced zero rhino poaching incidents<\/a> over more than 500 days, thanks to its cutting-edge technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These include using surveillance drones, moving camera systems, real-time animal tracking, and AI-powered tools, alongside a number of educational initiatives it ran in the nearby communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor over 500 days, this pristine sanctuary has remained carcass-free, a testament to the unwavering commitment of the reserve\u2019s management, rangers, and community partners,\u201d it said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of its major partners in launching technologies is the Connected Conservation Foundation (CCF), which deployed a \u201cvirtual fence\u201d across the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve in 2021. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This initiative saw cameras and sensors deployed between Sabi Sand and the greater Kruger National Park area, which shares the reserve\u2019s borders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sabi Sand covers an area greater than 62,000 hectares and shares more than 50km of non-fenced boundary with Kruger Park. Poachers would target a rhino at least once a week before deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CCF later planned to launch new network servers, 24\/7 thermal imaging cameras, and AI monitoring software that generate automated alerts when humans cross the boundary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company began working with Sabi Sand in 2015 and is piloting and improving conservation management tech solutions across 19 reserves in Africa and South America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New innovations that the CCF was piloting at Sabi include the usage of what it calls “Nomadic Masts.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNomadic masts provide long-range cameras and radio connectivity on wheels, where equipment is fixed securely to a well-anchored trailer,\u201d it explained. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese mobile units make it easy to redeploy surveillance in new locations.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cnomadic\u201d surveillance systems can address the problem of poachers learning the positions of fixed camera systems. Nomadic masts move across the park, enabling rangers to respond to evolving threats. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBy including this greater area in the project, it increases the chances of catching the poachers entering the private game reserve from Kruger,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CCF network at Sabi shares live video feeds, alerts, and intelligence with the park\u2019s rangers at a central operations centre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt the heart of Sabi Sand\u2019s anti-poaching efforts lies a state-of-the-art security hub,\u201d the reserve explained<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This control room operates<\/a> around the clock, with trained controllers monitoring steady data streams, and backup solar and generator power ensuring continuous uptime. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other solutions include a long-range, wide-area network (LoRaWAN) that uses unlicensed spectrum to provide live tracking of people, rangers, visitors, vehicles, natural resources, and wildlife. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rangers at Sabi track many data streams in the Earth Ranger software, consolidating them into a single platform for fast, easy management. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other data streams include vehicle and camera monitoring, fence alarms, and other critical infrastructure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reserve also conducts annual polygraph tests for all its field staff and select lodge staff to ensure accountability and identify potential internal poaching before any activities take place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, this method helped identify and led to the dismissal of 7 staff members who were linked to poaching activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In total, the reserve has around 2,000 employees, of whom 70% are residents of nearby communities in the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community engagement is also an important cornerstone of the reserve\u2019s anti-poaching activities, with the support of nearby communities credited as \u201cinvaluable.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe honour the incredible efforts of everyone involved in protecting rhinos, from rangers on the ground to the local communities and global partners who stand with us,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reserve has won awards over the years, including being voted the best resort in South Africa for 2025, and winning the “Best Luxury Bush Villa globally” at the 2025 World Luxury Hotel Awards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sabi’s claim to fame is its high density of Big 5 animals, including a particularly high number of leopards that are famously habituated to game drive vehicles, making photo opportunities easier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
