{"id":637621,"date":"2026-04-01T07:39:30","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T05:39:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=637621"},"modified":"2026-04-01T07:42:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T05:42:08","slug":"google-developing-fitness-band","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/gadgets\/637621-google-developing-fitness-band.html","title":{"rendered":"Google developing screenless fitness band to compete with Whoop and Oura"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Google is developing its own fitness band, aiming to compete with screenless wearable devices from upstarts like Whoop and Oura Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company has been developing the new model under the Fitbit brand and plans to release it later this year, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The device will include basic features and require a paid subscription to unlock more functionality \u2014\u00a0similar to the latest screenless wearables, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the product\u00a0hasn\u2019t been announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Steph Curry, an NBA player for the Golden State Warriors, teased the device on social media on Tuesday without elaborating on the branding or functionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Google said Curry has been \u201cworking with the team to cook up something special\u201d and that the company will share more \u201csoon.\u201d Curry said in his video that the device will unlock a \u201cnew relationship with your health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The launch will tie into an AI-powered Fitbit personal health coach that will live inside the newly redesigned Fitbit app. The personal health coach\u2019s public preview started in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The device is a gray cloth fitness band with orange lining that looks strikingly similar to Whoop\u2019s current screenless fitness band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike Whoop, Google will charge for the hardware, the person said. Whoop\u2019s business model is based entirely around a subscription.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Whoop competitor would add to Google\u2019s\u00a0growing roster\u00a0of wearables, which includes its Google Pixel smartwatch and more standard Fitbits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday, Google-owned Fitbit unveiled new personal health coach features for its app, which provides insights around cycle health and\u00a0mental health, as well as nutrition and water intake tracking.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The news follows Whoop\u2019s\u00a0announcement\u00a0that it raised an additional $575 million from a handful of venture capital firms and high-profile individual investors, including professional athletes Cristiano Ronaldo, LeBron James, Rory McIlroy and Reggie Miller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest funding round values the company at $10.1 billion. It plans to seek an initial public offering in the next two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For their part, other wearable makers like Apple Inc. are sticking to devices with screens.
