{"id":637727,"date":"2026-04-01T12:32:23","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T10:32:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=637727"},"modified":"2026-04-01T12:35:24","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T10:35:24","slug":"free-dstv-for-people-who-subscribed-to-showmax-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/637727-free-dstv-for-people-who-subscribed-to-showmax-in-south-africa.html","title":{"rendered":"Free DStv for people who subscribed to Showmax in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>MultiChoice has announced that Showmax subscribers will receive free trial access to DStv Stream Compact, with the standalone streaming service shutting down on 30 April 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trial period begins on 1 April 2026 and runs until the end of May, offering eligible customers a chance to experience the broader DStv ecosystem at no cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the trial concludes, qualifying subscribers can continue using DStv Stream Compact for the same price they paid for Showmax \u2014 R99 per month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The promotional price will remain in effect for 12 months, provided the subscriber\u2019s account remains up to date, and represents a 75% discount on the regular R399-per-month price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The offer applies to Showmax subscribers who do not have an active DStv subscription, as well as those who subscribe directly to the streaming service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MultiChoice said the move will bring Showmax Originals together with live television, international sport, and a wider range of entertainment within one application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur priority is to ensure customers continue to have a home for the stories they love,\u201d said Willington Ngwepe, CEO of MultiChoice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ngwepe said the change will bring thousands of hours of Showmax Originals and a deeper on-demand library into DStv Stream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are creating a more holistic experience where live sport, news, the best international content, and award-winning local drama live together.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Existing DStv customers who already receive Showmax as part of their package, or who add it to their DStv bill, are excluded from this specific trial offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, existing DStv Compact, Compact Plus, and Premium customers will also benefit from this change, as they will have access to Showmax content on DStv Stream at no extra cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eligible customers will receive communication regarding the trial via the email address linked to their Showmax account, which will include details on how to activate the offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Migrating from Showmax<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Willington-Ngwepe-MultiChoice-PTYLTD-1200x675.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-637729\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Willington-Ngwepe-MultiChoice-PTYLTD-1200x675.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Willington-Ngwepe-MultiChoice-PTYLTD-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Willington-Ngwepe-MultiChoice-PTYLTD-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Willington-Ngwepe-MultiChoice-PTYLTD-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Willington-Ngwepe-MultiChoice-PTYLTD.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Willington Ngwepe, CEO of MultiChoice (Pty) Ltd, DStv&#8217;s licensing entity in South Africa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The trial includes all Showmax plans, including the Showmax Premier League mobile plan. However, Showmax subscriptions will not migrate automatically.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCustomers who wish to continue watching will need to\u202ffollow the simple\u202fsign-up\u202fprocess\u202ffor\u202fDStv Stream shared via email, and create a new profile,\u202fall of\u202fwhich takes less than five minutes,\u201d MultiChoice explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Customers who choose not to move to DStv Stream may request a refund for any unused\u202fportion\u202fof their Showmax subscription.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is subject to standard terms and conditions. Automatic payments to Showmax will stop once the service is discontinued. Showmax stopped accepting new subscribers on 31 March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MultiChoice announced in March that <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/634342-end-of-the-line-for-showmax.html\">Showmax would be permanently shut down<\/a> after its new owner, Groupe Canal+, said it was too expensive to continue offering it as a standalone service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A dedicated Showmax section has been created in the DStv Stream app, where this content will reside.
