It was initially known as Toverberg, but was later renamed Colesberg.

The town boasts many buildings in a blend of Cape Dutch and Georgian architecture, with ceilings of reed and yellowwood.

The town saw significant action during the Second Anglo-Boer War, with many skirmishes occurring in the surrounding hills.

The Colesberg-Kemper Museum is housed in a former bank and features exhibits on the Anglo-Boer War and the Karoo Nomads.

Farming in the area is dedicated to horses and merino sheep. The greater Colesberg breeds many of the country’s top merinos.

Colesberg is also renowned for producing high-quality racehorses, and many stud farms, including one owned by golfer Gary Player, are nearby.

South Africans know the town as a halfway point between Johannesburg and Cape Town, which is a good place to stop over.

Colesberg has developed a thriving tourism industry and offers a hotel, a motel, and many guesthouses and B&Bs.

Several guest farms operate in the district, offering accommodation with 4×4 trails, mountain bike trails, and game hunting.

The Doornkloof Nature Reserve is located near Colesberg, which is home to Kudu, Eland, Brown Hyena, Bat-Eared Fox, Aardvark, and Aardwolf.

Photos of Colesberg

<figure class="wp-block-image
