Retail giant Shoprite has introduced an AI shopping assistant to its popular on-demand grocery platform Sixty60, which can prepare personalised baskets for shoppers based on their previous usage habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The AI assistant \u2014 called Pixie \u2014 was developed in-house by ShopriteX, the retailer’s tech and digital innovation unit, and marks the retailer’s first turn into “agentic AI commerce.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a post on LinkedIn<\/a>, Shoprite chief strategy officer and ShopriteX managing director Neil Schreuder described Pixie as “a trusted personal butler with a PhD in shopping.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Pixie is essentially a little companion that understands precisely what products you want and need. It helps complete your online ordering in record time,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Using AI, Pixie learns every time you shop, anticipating your needs and shopping cycles and then surfacing products before you have to start searching.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pixie functions similarly to popular dating app Tinder, where users can swipe left or right to indicate their interest or disinterest in another user. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a video<\/a> about the development of Pixie, Schreuder joked that the inclusion of the AI now makes Sixty60 “a lot more like a dating app.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Smart Basket feature presents product cards in a brand-new interface that lets users simply swipe to browse, swipe up to remove, or swipe down to add to their basket,” Shoprite said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This means that the days of searching and scrolling through endless product catalogues to find regulars or relevant products are limited.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shoprite said the AI learns from users’ behaviour patterns on the Sixty60 platform, gathering information on which products they add, when, and how often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on these habits, Pixie will suggest products to users on the app that are most relevant, making it easier to find products that are ordered often and reorder items customers buy regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aside from presenting offers for products customers buy most often based on their usage patterns and behaviours, Pixie will also recommend relevant deals rather than “random ones.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schreuder explained that user data privacy was top of mind during the development of the in-app AI. “Pixie is built to be private; your data is used for you. None of it ever leaves our environment.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pixie was developed by a cross-functional team of data scientists, machine learning engineers, software developers and product specialists at ShopriteX, of which he is the managing director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We want to use the very best of AI and tech to make it even easier and faster to shop online for your groceries,” he said. “It’s not a feature. It’s not an upgrade. It’s a whole new way to shop online.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pixie started to roll out to customers’ Sixty60 mobile apps on 9 April 2026. It will initially be tested as an experiment before full implementation. Xtra Savings Plus members will gain access first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shoprite launched Sixty60 in 2019 with the goal of providing an app where customers could shop in 60 seconds, and receive their groceries “anywhere in the country” within 60 minutes after shopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Today, Sixty60 has become a multi-category platform with 50,000 products. From Apples to Apple iPhones,” Schreuder said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
