{"id":645296,"date":"2026-05-05T08:19:28","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T06:19:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=645296"},"modified":"2026-05-05T08:43:51","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T06:43:51","slug":"national-outage-at-large-south-african-internet-service-provider","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/fibre\/645296-national-outage-at-large-south-african-internet-service-provider.html","title":{"rendered":"National outage at large South African Internet service provider"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Internet service provider Cool Ideas experienced a nationwide outage on Tuesday morning, with customers across the country reporting no connectivity on its fibre lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cool Ideas subscribers on Openserve, Vumatel, and Metrofibre reported that their connections were completely offline from around 07:00 on 5 May 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Downdetector showed that customers began reporting problems at 06:55. In the MyBroadband forum, a Cool Ideas representative said, \u201cWe are aware the team are on it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Internet service provider also acknowledged the outage on its <a href=\"https:\/\/coolideas.co.za\/announcements\/78820\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">network status page<\/a>. \u201cCool Ideas technicians are currently investigating. There is no ETR at the moment,\u201d it stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, when Cool Ideas experienced a major outage like this, it was <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/fibre\/319707-big-cool-ideas-outage-caused-by-ddos-attacks.html\">the victim of distributed denial-of-service attacks<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that case, it took a few weeks for the ISP to build up its defences to protect its infrastructure and effectively repel such attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contacted for comment, Cool Ideas said that the outage was related to an upgrade and network configuration error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe impact was picked up at about 07:04, with most of the network restored around 07:44.
