Security protocols in particular are constantly being reviewed and strengthened because that landscape evolves all the time.”

According to Gordon, the airline introduced a few additional security measures on the website for this year’s anniversary ticket sale.

One noticeable new feature is a bulletin board within the waiting room. In previous years, FlySafair pulled a live feed from X, but removed this live feed for its 12th birthday sale.

“We wanted something a bit more controlled and engaging this time around,” he said.

“We’ve also updated the Flappy Plane game with a leaderboard function and the ability to award prizes, which adds a bit more fun to the waiting experience.”

The sale started at 09:00 on Wednesday, 6 May 2026, and will run until 23:59. FlySafair said it would sell 50,000 seats during the promotion, exclusively through its website.

Gordon said that the biggest difference this year has been the broader geopolitical environment, which has driven international impacts on oil and jet fuel.

Freight through Iran’s Strait of Hormuz, a waterway through which ships carry around 20% of the world’s crude oil, has been disrupted by conflict between Iran, the United States and Israel.

Warships from both the Iranian and American military have blocked different portions of the Strait in a standoff that has lasted since the beginning of April, with no current end in sight.

“As a result, the fares this year are not R12 all-in as they were previously, but rather R12 excluding taxes and surcharges,” he said.

“It’s still an exceptionally strong deal, but we’re no longer in a position where we can effectively subsidise the taxes and fuel-related components of the ticket as well.”

Gordon said it would be interesting to see how consumer demand and behaviour evolve over the course of the campaign, as petrol and diesel prices are due to increase officially on Wednesday.

He said early indications for the anniversary sale showed that interest remains very strong, “but we’ll have a much clearer picture as the day progresses.”

South African airlines forced to add surcharges to tickets

Kirby Gordon, FlySafair chief marketing officer

In March, MyBroadband reported that several South African airlines added fuel surcharges to domestic flights.

That month, local airlines were told that Jet A1 fuel prices were increased at Cape Town and Gqberha by as much as 70% week-on-week with immediate effect.

FlySafair was forced to introduce a temporary fuel surcharge for the first time in its operational history due to the increased jet fuel cost, applicable to bookings from 12 March.

“We will be specifically itemising this temporary dynamic fuel surcharge on all tickets to ensure fairness and transparency to our customers,” Gordon said at the time.

On 23 April, FlySafair announced it had reduced the temporary fuel charge for the second consecutive week, reflecting a decrease in Jet A1 fuel prices.

“While the reductions are encouraging, Jet A1 pricing remains more than double pre-conflict levels, and the surcharge will remain in place until prices stabilise at sustainable levels,” it said.

The current levy is set to run until 21 August 2026, with the airline indicating that it reviews and adjusts the surcharge every seven days in line with the pricing it receives from its supplier.

“We’ve adjusted the levy every week since it was introduced, and these two consecutive reductions reflect that commitment in action,” explained Gordon.

“The surcharge is not a revenue mechanism, it moves directly with our actual fuel costs.”

Low-cost airline FlySafair has reviewed and added to security measures on its website ahead of its R12 per ticket Birthday Dash sale.

[27
61785,32430,105033,105035,105036,69655,105034,103578
post-645659","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-security","tag-airlines","tag-flysafair","tag-flysafair-birthday-sale","tag-fuel-surcharge","tag-jet-a1-fuel","tag-kirby-gordon","tag-r12-ticket-sale","tag-strait-of-hormuz
