When a button on the bottom side of the watch’s frame is pressed, the display pops up and can be rotated.

This enabled one of the wearable’s other unique features: a smartwatch with two cameras. In rotation mode, users can take photos with the wearable’s higher-resolution rear camera.

“The new kid on the block, the Huawei Watch Kids X1 Series, features a 110-degree ultra-wide-angle front camera,” Huawei said.

It added that it chose an ultra-wide-angle front camera so kids wearing the device can ensure their entire group of friends fits in the photo.

Huawei gave the Watch Kids X1 a 5MP front camera, while the rear camera sensor is 12MP, allowing the user to capture finer detail.

“With its detachable and rotatable device body and interactive AR features, the smartwatch is designed to make everyday use more engaging and intuitive for children,” Huawei said.

Regarding the screen, the Watch Kids X1 is fitted with a 1.82-inch AMOLED display with a 408 x 408-pixel resolution, offering a broad field of view.

Huawei built the smartwatch’s frame and body from various plastics, and although it felt relatively bulky, it weighed only 70g with the strap.

The tech giant’s new children-oriented smartwatch is powered by 2GB of RAM and features 32GB of read-only storage.

Huawei also packed the smartwatch with various sensors, including a barometer, gyroscope, accelerometer, optical heart rate sensor, magnetometer, and Hall effect sensor.

The Watch Kids X1 is protected against water damage to some extent. Huawei said it complied with two-atmosphere-rated water resistance under the ISO 22810:2010 standard.

That meant the device could withstand up to 20 metres of static water pressure for up to 10 minutes. Crucially, it does not mean the product is water-resistant at 20 metres deep.

Resistance, battery, and South African launch

Huawei secured IP68 and IP69 ratings for the Watch Kids X1, both under the IEC 60529:2013 standard.

These tests differ in the resistance they test. IP68-rated devices are protected against long-term submersion, while IP69-rated devices are protected against high-pressure, high-temperature jets.

“The product can be worn during shallow water activities such as swimming in a pool or along the coast,” Huawei said.

“After wearing the device in water activities, clean and dry it promptly, remove the water stains from the product surfaces and all holes.”

It added that users should also make use of the device’s drainage feature to avoid any negative impact on device performance.

Regarding its battery, Huawei said the Watch Kids X1 offers one day of battery life under typical use and charges via a Pogo Pin charger.

Available in blue and pink, Huawei did not announce South African pricing for the Watch Kids X1. However, it confirmed that the device would launch locally in August 2026.

Huawei Watch
