{"id":64630,"date":"2012-11-14T08:01:09","date_gmt":"2012-11-14T06:01:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=64630"},"modified":"2012-11-14T13:57:37","modified_gmt":"2012-11-14T11:57:37","slug":"e-toll-public-hearings-continue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/technology\/64630-e-toll-public-hearings-continue.html","title":{"rendered":"E-toll public hearings continue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Public hearings on the e-tolling of Gauteng highways continue in Pretoria on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The hearings are to give all affected parties an opportunity to share their views with the government about the proposed tolls.<\/p>\n<p>In October, the transport department instructed the SA National Roads Agency Limited (<a title=\"Sanral\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/372008-SANRAL\">Sanral<\/a>) to suspend all processes related to the tolling of national roads.<\/p>\n<p>The suspension included the planned phase two of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Plan, the Cape Winelands and the Wild Coast.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is important to note that there&#8217;s a clear distinction or separation between phase one [almost completed] and phase two [no work has started as yet],&#8221; said transport spokesperson <a title=\"Tiyane Rikhotso\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/338147-Tiyani-Rikhotso\">Tiyane Rikhotso<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He said phase one was almost complete and that the department wanted to hear alternative views from the public on the best possible model of financing the debt incurred.<\/p>\n<p>The suspension was welcomed by various organisations, including the <a title=\"SA Municipal Workers' Union\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/471632-South-African-Municipal-Workers-Union-SAMWU\">SA Municipal Workers&#8217; Union<\/a>, the <a title=\"Freedom Front Plus\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/429351-FF-Freedom-Front-Plus\">Freedom Front Plus<\/a> and <a title=\"AfriForum\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/422404-AfriForum\">AfriForum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In August, Cabinet approved reduced toll tariffs for the N1 highway between Johannesburg and Pretoria.<\/p>\n<p>Motorcyclists were expected to pay 24c a kilometre, light motor vehicles 40c, medium vehicles R1 and &#8220;longer&#8221;
