{"id":646320,"date":"2026-05-08T15:18:15","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T13:18:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=646320"},"modified":"2026-05-08T16:04:50","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T14:04:50","slug":"good-news-for-south-africans-who-watch-rugby-on-dstv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/646320-good-news-for-south-africans-who-watch-rugby-on-dstv.html","title":{"rendered":"Good news for South Africans who watch rugby on DStv"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>MultiChoice&#8217;s parent company, Groupe Canal+, announced on Friday that it had renewed its multi-year domestic broadcast rights agreement with the South African Rugby Union (SARU).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the agreement, SuperSport will remain the exclusive broadcast rights holder for all SARU\u2019s domestic competitions and Springbok women\u2019s and junior age-group matches in Sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This announcement is the first of its kind with a major local sports federation since Canal+ took control of MultiChoice in September last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt reaffirms Canal+\u2019s long-term commitment to local sport. SuperSport has been a proud SA Rugby broadcast partner for more than 30 years,\u201d it stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canal+ Africa CEO, David Mignot, said he was delighted with the continuation of the domestic rights agreement, which would make all domestic rugby matches available exclusively on SuperSport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In South Africa, the SuperSport channels are supplied by Canal+ Africa to MultiChoice (Pty) Ltd (also known as LicenceCo), which provides the DStv offering to subscribers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs promised, we are doubling down on our investment in local content, including the sports content that matters the most to people on the continent,\u201d said Mignot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the South African market, rugby has grown into becoming a part of the national psyche \u2014 as evidenced by the national euphoria that erupted each time the Springboks won the Rugby World Cup.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SARU president Mark Alexander said that \u201cafter a thorough and extensive series of engagements\u201d, they were very happy to have concluded their first agreement with the MultiChoice Group and Canal+.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey have demonstrated a shared understanding of the importance of rugby to the South African public and we trust this is the first of many such agreements,\u201d stated Alexander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rendani Ramovha, Canal+ director for sports content in English and Portuguese-speaking Africa, said the renewal was a proud moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt reaffirms our commitment to the sports fan.
