Arniston in the Western Cape is a sleepy fishing village where the water is pristine, there are no crowds, there is one notable hotel, and scientific equipment regularly passes through its narrow streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The village is near the Denel Overberg Test Range, a high-security facility where sophisticated weapons are tested and in which Elon Musk considered investing for SpaceX in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What would become the village of Arniston, also known as Waenhuiskrans, rested in the shadows of the Overberg mountain range and against the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Khoisan nomads and European explorers first made contact in the 17th<\/sup> century. By 1708, cattle farmers were the first to settle the area at a farm called Longefontein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1805, the quiet village witnessed the tragic sinking of the HMS Arniston, where only six sailors survived after the vessel struck rocks and was shipwrecked after being separated from her convoy in a storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The village would ultimately be named after the ship and see a monument erected in honour of the lives lost in the disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More farmers eventually settled the area around the monument. Shortly after, the descendants of Arniston\u2019s current fishing community moved to the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were of the Hessequa people, many of whom were freed slaves who built a small community in Arniston in 1850. The town\u2019s burgeoning coloured community would soon have to fight for their land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1894, Arniston Downs, a nearby holding, was purchased by the Pratt Brothers, who didn\u2019t believe the coloured fishermen were worthy of owning a large part of what would become Arniston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pratt Brothers would take significant portions of this land and develop the town into a holiday village, which included the relocation of the local fishermen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was settled in a court case in the Supreme Court of Cape Town nearly one hundred years ago, where the court ruled that five plots of land be set aside for the fishermen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The court ruled that the five local fishing families, who had lived in Arniston for over 50 years by then, be granted the right to develop their own land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arniston was finally established as a town in 1922, and in 1932, the Fishermen\u2019s Union was founded to manage the fishing village and its residents. The fishermen continued their humble existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The town has been mentioned in several songs over the years, including Ta\u2019 Mossie Se Sakkie Sakkie Boeredans<\/em> by Sonja Herholdt in 1978 and By Waenhuiskrans<\/em> by Carike Keuzenkamp in 1996.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the residents of Arniston continued their mostly undisturbed, humble existence. The town has grown into a tourist destination thanks to its white-sand beaches and crystal-clear water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2025, Go World Travel Magazine named the town \u201cthe ultimate secret holiday hotspot in South Africa,\u201d notable for its quiet wonder and calm, relaxing atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe beauty of Arniston isn\u2019t just in its landscapes or its history, it\u2019s in the feeling you carry with you when you leave,\u201d the magazine wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA sense of stillness, wonder, and the quiet realisation that you\u2019ve found something truly special.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearby, South African weapons and aerospace manufacturer Denel operates its Overberg Test Range under tight security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The facility was used in the past to test a series of missiles built in cooperation with the Israeli government until the project was cancelled in 1992.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It remained South Africa\u2019s premier facility for rocket testing and launch capabilities, with several international companies seeking to test their equipment there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) announced in 2024 that a new rocket gantry was installed at the facility. It was inaugurated by the Deputy Minister of Science and Technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis gantry is a national asset that will be used to launch suborbital rockets built by ASRI,\u201d said deputy minister Nomalungelo Gina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt can also accommodate much larger solid-propellant vehicles of the type operated by space-faring nations, including other potential international clients on the continent and worldwide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The facility was specifically designed to support next-generation aerospace projects. That year, the gantry was used to launch a suborbital sounding rocket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe payload successfully measured the Earth\u2019s magnetic field and flight data during the flight, which lasted for approximately 400 seconds,\u201d said SANSA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2025, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk revealed to President Cyril Ramaphosa in a closed-door meeting that there was a possible opportunity for SpaceX to launch rockets from the Denel Overberg Test Range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to BizNews<\/a>, SpaceX was interested in the Overberg site to launch satellites that would cross the South Pole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A potential investment from SpaceX would dramatically speed up the capabilities of the Denel Test Range, which plans to support full orbital launches by 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
