{"id":646994,"date":"2026-05-12T10:37:28","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T08:37:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=646994"},"modified":"2026-05-12T10:42:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T08:42:13","slug":"major-iphone-feature-launched-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/gadgets\/646994-major-iphone-feature-launched-in-south-africa.html","title":{"rendered":"Major iPhone feature launched in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Apple announced on Tuesday that Tap to Pay on iPhone is now available in South Africa, enabling merchants and businesses that use iPhones to accept contactless payments on their devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its announcement, Apple said the feature was rolled out in collaboration with local payment platforms Yoco and iStore Pay, as well as other developers and payment networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Tap to Pay on iPhone makes it easy for businesses of any size to accept payments from contactless credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, and other digital wallets using only their iPhone,&#8221; the company said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tap to Pay for merchants is also available in partner-enabled iOS apps, with no additional hardware or payment terminal required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;With Tap to Pay on iPhone, merchants can accept contactless payments through a supporting iOS app on iPhone Xs\u00a0or later running the latest iOS version,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At checkout, a merchant can tell customers to hold their contactless credit or debit card, smartphone, smartwatch, or other supported digital wallet near the merchant&#8217;s iPhone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The payment will be completed securely using Near Field Communication (NFC), allowing merchants to accept payments wherever they do business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apple said that it worked closely with payment platforms and app developers across the payment and commerce industry in South Africa to offer Tap to Pay on iPhone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Payment platforms and developers can integrate Tap to Pay on iPhone into their iOS apps, making it easy for merchants to enable this secure and convenient capability,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>iStore Pay and Yoco were the first payment platforms in South Africa to offer Tap to Pay on iPhone after the collaboration, the company explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hardware-based security<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Apple-Tap-to-Pay-iPhone.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-647038\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Apple-Tap-to-Pay-iPhone.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Apple-Tap-to-Pay-iPhone-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Apple-Tap-to-Pay-iPhone-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Location of Secure Element chip inside an iPhone<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tap to Pay on iPhone supports Apple Pay and other digital wallets, as well as contactless credit and debit cards from payment networks like Mastercard and Visa, with American Express coming soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;With Tap to Pay on iPhone, customers&#8217; payment data is protected by the same technology that makes Apple Pay private and secure,&#8221; Apple said in the announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It said that privacy was a fundamental feature in the design and development of Tap to Pay functionality on iPhone.
