DStv<\/a> BoxOffice Online is now open to anyone in South Africa, whether they are subscribers of DStv\u2019s satellite service or not, a MultiChoice<\/a> spokesperson has confirmed.<\/p>\n

This comes after the beta and subsequent commercial launch of the online movie rental service were delayed in the first quarter of 2012.<\/p>\n

In November 2011, MultiChoice said that it was still busy with testing and rescheduled the beta launch for Q1 2012 – pushing back the commercial launch date as well.<\/p>\n

The service is available to any South African with an Internet connection, and MultiChoice said that users can rent and stream from the BoxOffice website or download the film to the DStv Desktop Player.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey simply need to sign up to be able to use the service,\u201d MultiChoice said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe currently have around 100 movies available online, from blockbuster new releases to a selection of classics,\u201d the company added.<\/p>\n

Asked whether there\u2019s a market for on-demand video content in South Africa, MultiChoice said that there definitely is.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the price of broadband access continues to drop and speeds and data caps continue to increase, general video consumption on the Internet will also increase,\u201d MultiChoice said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is what we\u2019ve seen in the US and Europe where local content has proven to be popular online.\u201d<\/p>\n
